Teil Vier unserer Interviewreihe vor dem „16 Carat Gold“ führt uns zu einem echten Veteranen aus Wrestling-Europa. Rede und Antwort stand dieses Mal Tristan Archer, die „French Revolution“. Was er, allen technischen Problemen zum Trotz, zu NXT Europe sagt und was seine Ziele für 2023 sind, lest ihr folgend! Viel Spaß! Tristan Archer: Mir geht es einigermaßen gut. Ich meine, es war kein guter Tag, aber ich habe es durchgestanden. Es war ein bemerkenswertes Wochenende, ich hatte ein sehr, sehr tolles Match bei „Passion Pro“, aber Wrestling ist Wrestling. Ich wurde mit dem Kopf auf den Boden geschmettert, und da war es einfach. Und der blaue Fleck geht mir im Moment durch mein Auge. Gestern konnte ich es nicht öffnen. Heute ist es etwas besser, außer dass ich aussehe, als hätte ich mein Gesicht geschminkt. Aber der Schmerz ist weg.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Das steht Dir aber! Beginnen wir mit einer ganz allgemeinen Frage: Welche ist Deine erste Erinnerung an Wrestling?
Tristan Archer: Meine erste Erinnerung? Ich war vier, vielleicht fünf Jahre alt. Am Samstag war keine Schule, ich wachte gerade auf und wollte etwas zu essen holen. Also ging ich ins Wohnzimmer und mein Vater sah sich WWF an. Der Undertaker feierte gerade seinen Einzug. Der Fernseher wurde schwarz und ich hörte dieses „Dong! Dong! Dong!“, und ich war hypnotisiert. Ich konnte mich nicht mehr bewegen. Ich saß einfach neben meinem Vater und sah mir ungefähr 45 Minuten Wrestling an und dachte überhaupt nicht mehr daran, etwas zu essen zu bekommen. In diesem allerersten Moment habe ich mich verliebt. Ich habe mein allererstes Wrestling-Match gesehen und wollte das für den Rest meines Lebens machen. Ich wollte Wrestler werden.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Und das hast Du erreicht. Seit 2009 steigst Du aktiv in den Ring. Welche Wrestler haben Dich am meisten geprägt? Wer hat Dir besonders in der Anfangszeit Ihrer Karriere geholfen, Dich weiterzuentwickeln?
Tristan Archer: Als ich ein Kind war, mochte ich Kane, The Undertaker, die großen Jungs, ich stand wirklich auf diese Art von Typen. Aber als ich aufwuchs und mehr über die Geheimnisse des Wrestlings lernte, nahm ich die Typen in meiner Größe wahr, wie Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Kurt Angle, all diese technischen Typen. Das hat mir wirklich geholfen, meinen Weg zu finden, den ich als Wrestler gehen wollte. Als ich mit dem Wrestling anfing, hatte ich das Glück, mit Typen wie Tommy End, Jonathan Gresham oder Chris Hero zusammenzuarbeiten. Die Jungs haben mir sehr geholfen. Wenn ich fünf Namen auswählen müsste, die mich ein wenig definieren, würde ich Eddie [Guerrero], Daniel Bryan, Jonathan Gresham, Tommy End und vielleicht Dolph Ziggler für die Art und Weise, wie er im Ring Sachen verkauft, nennen.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Erinnerst Du Dich an Dein erstes Wrestling-Match? Ich habe nachgeschaut, Du hast gegen einen Wrestler namens „Stixx“ verloren. Wie war es für Dich, Dein allererstes Wrestling-Match zu haben?
Tristan Archer: Es war nicht das allererste, weil ich vorher in Kanada gerungen habe – ein Rumble- und ein Einzel-Match, bevor ich zurück nach Frankreich kam. Aber das allererste Match in Frankreich war gegen Stixx. Ich habe unter dem Namen David Goliath gerungen, weil Stixx ein großer Typ war, ich sollte der kleine Typ sein. Du kennst die Geschichte aus der Bibel, „David gegen Goliath“. Der Promoter wollte, dass ich diesen Namen benutze und ich habe ihn einfach in dieser Show verwendet, weil es mein allererstes Match war, ich hatte keine Erfahrung und noch keinen Wrestling-Namen. Ich ging dorthin und da war dieser Engländer. Sympathisch und freundlich, er sieht mich an und sagt: „Nein, ich werde diese Person nicht squashen. Er ist viel zu groß, um von mir gesquasht zu werden.“ Wir wollten also ein leichtes Match von vielleicht sechs, sieben, acht Minuten zeigen, und ich wollte, dass er mich mindestens zweimal bumpt, und er sagte: „Oh, okay, kein Problem.“ Also haben wir ein leichtes Match mit einem kleinen Comeback gemacht, und dann hat er mich in den letzten fünf Minuten einfach verprügelt. Es war eine sehr erfreuliche erste Erfahrung in Frankreich. Die Art und Weise, wie wir das Match aufgebaut haben, hat mich bei den französischen Fans over gebracht. Ich bin wirklich dankbar, dass ich bei meinem allerersten Match in Frankreich mit ihm zusammenarbeiten konnte.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Das ist 13, oder sogar 14 Jahre her. Was war Dein schlimmstes Erlebnis in Deiner Karriere?
Tristan Archer: Die schlimmste Erfahrung? Einfach. Okay, nicht einfach, aber es war nicht die Schuld des Veranstalters. Kurz vor dem „Cruiserweight Classic“ habe ich mir eine schwere Verletzung zugezogen. Ein Adduktor wurde gerade von meinen Knochen gerissen, es war wie ein Schnitt. Zum Glück musste ich nicht operiert werden, aber es war wirklich sehr schmerzhaft. Ich sollte einige Wochen oder sogar Monate aussetzen. Das wollte ich vermeiden, weil das „Cruiserweight Classic“ anstand. Ich wollte mich testen und sicherstellen, dass ich trotz meiner Verletzung beim „Cruiserweight Classic“ antreten kann. Es war so eine große Chance. Ich sagte mir, dass ich einen Weg finden werde, den Schmerz auszuhalten. Mein allererstes Match mit dieser Verletzung war für „Ouest Catch“. Ich sagte dem Veranstalter, er solle mir ein leichtes Match geben. Er hat mich dazu gebracht, an einem Battle Royale teilzunehmen, bei dem ich nicht einmal einen Bump nehmen, sondern höchstens vielleicht eine Clothesline zeigen und jemanden aus dem Ring werfen musste. Ich stand also im Ring und Tränen schossen mir in die Augen, weil alles schmerzte. Eine einfache Clothesline war schmerzhaft. Wahrer Schmerz, es war fürchterlich. Ich beendete und gewann das Match schließlich. Als ich backstage war, fragten mich die Leute, warum ich weinte. Sie fragten sich, ob ich so glücklich darüber war, der Number One Contender zu werden, und ich sagte „Ja. Es ist so wichtig für mich, Ouest Catch-Champion zu werden.“
David (wrestling-infos.de): Also den Kayfabe aufrechterhalten.
Tristan Archer: Kayfabe, Kayfabe, Kayfabe. Aber ja, es war die schlimmste Erfahrung aller Zeiten. Es waren nicht nur die Schmerzen, ich dachte auch an den „Cruiserweight Classic“. Ich dachte, wenn ich nicht einmal fünf Minuten im Ring stehen und nichts tun kann, ohne diese Schmerzen zu haben, bin ich nicht in der Lage, am „Cruiserweight Classic“ teilzunehmen. Ich habe seit Beginn meiner Karriere darauf hingearbeitet, ein Match bei WWE zu haben, und als es endlich so weit war, verletze ich mich im Fitnessstudio. Das ist eine schreckliche Erinnerung.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Lasst uns weg von den schlechten Erinnerungen und auf die andere Seite gehen. Was war Dein schönstes Erlebnis?
Tristan Archer: Da gibt es einige. Der letztjährige Gewinn der wXw Unified Wrestling Championship bei „16 Gold Carat“ gehört auf jeden Fall dazu. Ich kannte die Pläne der wXw ein paar Tage vorher nicht einmal. Ich dachte, sie würden Levaniel oder [Axel] Tischer den Gürtel geben. Tischer kam von der WWE zurück, er war der größte Name in Europa. Er ist so talentiert, dass er jeden durch jedes Match tragen kann. Levaniel war so over, die Leute liebten Levaniel mit seinem „Liebe“-Gimmick so sehr. Ich war der Franzose mittendrin. Die Leute liebten mich am Anfang und fingen dann an, mich sehr zu hassen. Das Gefühl, an der Spitze der größten Liga Europas zu stehen, der besondere Einzug mit den französischen Flaggen – ich habe hart daran gearbeitet, Frankreich auf die Wrestling-Landkarte zu bringen. Als ich 25 Jahre alt war, interessierte sich niemand für Frankreich. Niemand wusste, dass es französisches Wrestling gibt. Und im letztjährigen März stand der Franzose an der Spitze Europas. Ich habe es geschafft. Es war also eindeutig einer der besten Momente meiner Karriere.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Ich war dabei. Es war in der Tat ein besonderes Match und ein besonderer Moment. Hass pur in der Turbinenhalle. Du hast es erwähnt, es gibt viele deutsche und ungarische Wrestler, aber wir sehen inzwischen auch viele französische Wrestler in wXw. Du, die Frenchadors, Calypso, Anastasia Bardot, sie alle waren schon einmal dort. Wie tief ist der französische Talentpool im Wrestling heutzutage?
Tristan Archer: Es gibt auch Alex, den Ringrichter.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Ja, natürlich.
Tristan Archer: Und Du hast Rick Salem, als sie wXw NOW & Friends gemacht haben, Du hast Kuro und Christianum, Du hast auch ein paar Belgier. Es ist wirklich schön zu sehen, dass sich die Türen für Franzosen zunehmend öffnen, weil sie wirklich hart arbeiten. Es ist ihnen ernst damit. Sie fragen immer nach Rat, sie arbeiten hart an ihren Gimmicks, an ihrem Aussehen und allem, nur um an der Spitze zu stehen. Ich spüre wirklich das Feuer in der Wrestling-Szene. Die meisten von ihnen arbeiten wirklich hart. Es ist eine Freude, das zu sehen. Wenn ich die Stiefel an den Nagel hänge, wird es die nächste Generation noch besser machen als ich.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Ich habe letztes Jahr beim „Tag Team Festival“ mit Tassilo Jung gesprochen und er hat mir gesagt, dass Du derjenige bist, der dafür verantwortlich ist, französische Talente zu rekrutieren, wenn er sie bei einer wXw-Shows braucht. Sag uns, wie das abläuft. Du bist schon so lange in dieser Szene, hast Du ein großes Netzwerk?
Tristan Archer: Ich arbeite immer noch für viele Ligen in Frankreich. Wenn ich dort bin, stellen sie sicher, dass es uns gut geht, wir bekommen ein Hotel und solche Sachen. Schau Dir wXw an. Sie sind so erfolgreich, weil es nicht nur ein Geschäft, sondern ein sicherer Arbeitsplatz ist. Ich arbeite für Ligen in Frankreich, die auf die gleiche Weise funktionieren. Wenn ich dort bin, schaue ich mir jedes Match an. Ich versuche, die Einstellung der Wrestler herauszufinden. Ich möchte sehen, ob sie höflich sind und Rat suchen. Außerdem bin ich ständig auf der Suche nach Menschen, denen ich vertrauen kann. In diesem Geschäft musst Du den Menschen vertrauen, mit denen Du zusammenarbeitest. Tassilo und wXw vertrauen mir, weil ich keinen Freund dorthin bringen werde, wenn er kein guter Wrestler ist. Es könnte der beste Freund sein, den ich habe. Wenn er im Ring schlecht, oder unsicher ist, ist er nicht das wonach wXw sucht. Und das wissen sie. Ich denke, deshalb vertrauen sie mir.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Du hast davon gesprochen, die wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship zu gewinnen. Du hast den Titel ungefähr neun Monate lang gehalten, abgesehen von diesem einen Monat, über den wir nicht sprechen werden. Wie zufrieden bist Du mit Deinem Run als Champion?
Tristan Archer: Ich bin sehr zufrieden. Wir können jedoch gerne über diesen Monat sprechen, denn er hat mich zum zweifachen wXw Unified Champion gemacht. Es war etwas traurig, aber auch irgendwie cool, weil ich noch nicht lange mit ihnen gearbeitet hatte. Wenn Du Dir die verschiedenen Champions ansiehst, die sie hatten, denke ich,t dass ich einer derjenigen bin, die es am schnellsten geschafft haben; und derjenige, der den Titel am schnellsten zweimal gewonnen hat. Ich hatte einen sehr coolen Lauf, ich hatte gute Matches mit Axel [Tischer] oder Jurn [Simmons]. Ich erinnere mich an ein Match in Hamburg, das Publikum war überragend. Sie sangen 25 Minuten lang das „Jurn Simmons“-Lied. Nonstop. Es war verrückt. Dann hatte ich ein Match mit Jonathan Gresham, den ich seit fünf oder sechs Jahren nicht mehr getroffen hatte. Ich gewann den Titel am selben Wochenende, an dem er das „16 Carat Gold“ gewann. Eine kleine Geschichte, Gresham und ich standen uns sehr nahe, als er in Frankreich war. Er verbrachte Zeit bei mir und wir sprachen über die Zukunft und darüber, was wir im Wrestling-Business erreichen wollten. Wir sind am selben Wochenende in derselben Promotion, er gewinnt das prestigeträchtigste Turnier in den Indies, ich gewinne den größten Titel in Europa. Einfach Wahnsinn. Ich habe mich nicht verletzt, ich hatte einige großartige Matches, einige tolle Reaktionen des Publikums. Das war etwas ungewohnt, denn man fragt sich immer, ob man seinen Job als Heel gut macht oder nicht. Es ist überraschend, Leute zu sehen, die jubeln, wenn ich jemandem in die Eier trete. Meistens buhen sie, aber als ich etwa den Titel an Levaniel verlor, stand die Hälfte der Menge hinter mir. Norman [Harras] hat mir geholfen, ich habe Levaniel in die Eier getreten und die Leute haben gejubelt. Kommt schon, Leute. Vielleicht wollten sie damit zeigen, dass ihnen mein Championship Run gefallen hat. Sogar Roman Reigns, der ein reiner Heel ist, bekommt ständig Ovationen. Vielleicht nicht in Kanada und Montreal, aber meistens. Ich denke, sie schätzen die Arbeit, die er als Heel tut. Es ist seltsam, aber wir müssen mit dieser Art von Reaktion klarkommen.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Ich war bei ziemlich vielen wXw-Shows, zumindest in Oberhausen und Bielefeld. Du bekommst meistens gute Heel-Reaktionen. Ich meine, da stehen Leute mit erhobenem Mittelfinger vor Dir.
Tristan Archer: Das gefällt mir.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Reden wir über das „16 Carat Gold“-Turnier. In diesem Jahr wird zum ersten Mal die wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship bei dem Turnier ausgetragen. Was sind Deine Gedanken dazu?
Tristan Archer: Es ist ziemlich einzigartig. Ich weiß nicht, ob das fortan jedes Jahr so sein wird, aber warum nicht? Das hat es noch nie zuvor gegeben, also denke ich, dass es etwas mehr Druck auf die Teilnehmer ausüben wird. Sie können eines der prestigeträchtigsten Turniere der Wrestling-Welt und auch den größten Gürtel im europäischen Wrestling gewinnen. Der Gewinner des diesjährigen „16 Carat“ wird Geschichte schreiben. Es ist gigantisch.
David (wrestling-infos.de): 16 Jungs sind im Turnier, Du bist einer von ihnen. Hast Du einen Traumgegner? Es gibt Fly-ins, die man in Deutschland normalerweise nicht sieht. Gibt es jemanden, bei dem Du sagen würdest: „Wow, ich möchte wirklich gegen diese Person kämpfen“?
Tristan Archer: Ja, ich würde gerne gegen Davey Richards ringen. Ich habe am Anfang des Interviews über Tommy End gesprochen und ich erinnere mich an ein Interview von Tommy, kurz bevor er bei der WWE unterschrieb. Er sagte, er habe drei oder vier Traumgegner, und Davey und ich standen auf dieser Liste. Also wollte ich seit diesem Tag ein Match mit Richards haben und sehen, was wir zusammen zeigen können. Ich denke, wir haben einen Stil, mit dem wir wirklich gut zusammenpassen und ein großartiges Match abliefern können.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Nun, während wir aufnehmen [am 21.02.2023], ist weder Dein Match noch das Match von Davey Richards angekündigt. Also, vielleicht wird es Dein Erstrunden-Match.
Tristan Archer: Das wäre ein sehr hartes Erstrunden-Match für mich, wenn es Davey wäre. Es wäre ein harter Start in das Turnier. Er ist ein Veteran. Er ist seit Jahren im Wrestling. Nicht nur das, er hat auch mit den Besten der Welt gerungen, er ist einer der Besten der Welt. Wer in der ersten Runde auf Richards trifft, muss alles geben, denn er ist ein harter Gegner.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Ja, das stimmt. Also, wir haben vorhin darüber gesprochen, Du hast den Titel im Dezember verloren. Was sind Deine diesjährigen Ziele bei wXw? Oder vielleicht generell?
Tristan Archer: Ich versuche wirklich, den Leuten so gut wie möglich zu helfen. Ich möchte zurückgeben, was Wrestling mir gegeben hat. Ich hatte das Glück, zweimal mit der WWE zusammenzuarbeiten. Außerdem war ich in der ganzen Welt unterwegs, ich war in den USA, Kuwait, Katar, Malaysia, überall in Europa. Also muss ich dem Wrestling etwas zurückgeben. Ich würde gerne versuchen, ein Talent zu finden, das sich gut macht, ihm ein paar gute Ratschläge geben und sehen, ob er seinen Weg geht. Bei wXw? Gewinn des „16 Carat Gold“. Oder vielleicht etwas einfacher, weil es schwierig ist, das Carat zu gewinnen, Triple Crown Champion werden. Ich möchte die Shotgun Championship und die Tag Team Championship gewinnen. Aber dafür müsste ich einen Tag Team-Partner finden. Alle Gürtel in wXw zu gewinnen wäre ein großartiger Moment für mich, denn das würde bedeuten, dass ein Franzose wXw-Geschichte geschrieben hat.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Apropos Tag-Team-Gürtel. Wenn Du einen Tag Team-Partner auswählen müsstest, der mit Dir um diese Gürtel kämpft, wer wäre das?
Tristan Archer: Das ist einfach. Sobald er zurück ist, Marius Al-Ani. Ich denke, Marius und ich könnten ein sehr technisches, hartes, und schlagkräftiges Tag Team sein.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Er war seit dem letztjährigen Carat nicht mehr für wXw im Ring, aber vielleicht sehen wir ihn wieder.
Tristan Archer: Ja, seit er sich verletzt hat. Aber hoffentlich ja, zeitnah. Das wäre toll.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Du hast vorhin über die WWE „Cruiserweight Classic“ gesprochen. Dieses Jahr startet NXT Europe. Ist das für Dich noch ein Traum?
Tristan Archer: Das kommt darauf an. Wenn sie zu mir kommen, mich bitten, ein Teil davon zu sein, und wir bei den Konditionen übereinkommen, wäre es ein Vergnügen, für sie zu arbeiten. Ein Vollzeit-Wrestler unter guten Bedingungen zu sein, ist immer noch ein Traum für mich. Ein Wrestler zu sein, nicht nur während seiner Arbeit für die WWE, vermittelt den Menschen überall wo man hinkommt Emotionen. So sehe ich Wrestling. Es wäre ein neues Abenteuer, Vollzeit Wrestler zu sein und nicht nur am Wochenende, während ich einen anderen Job habe, in dem ich fünfmal die Woche arbeite. Zeit zum Durchatmen und Entspannen haben. Wenn sie möchten, dass ich meine Erfahrung einbringe und mich als Vertrauensperson sehen, bin ich natürlich gerne dabei.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Ich drücke die Daumen. Vielleicht brauchen sie jemanden mit den Verbindungen, die Du in Frankreich hast, wer weiß. Also, letzte Frage: Was ist Deine kühnste Prognose für wXw im Jahr 2023?
Tristan Archer: Tristan Archer im Tag-Team-Turnier. World Tag Team Festival.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Das wäre toll.
Tristan Archer: Ich muss nur jemanden finden, der an diesen Tagen Zeit für verrückte Tag Team-Matches hat. Ich denke, das wird künftig mein Hauptziel sein.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Nun, Du hast noch ein paar Monate Zeit dafür. Möglicherweise hast Du Glück und findest jemanden.
Tristan Archer: Ich weiß es nicht. Die Zeit vergeht so schnell.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Das stimmt. Tristan, vielen Dank für Deine Zeit. Technische Schwierigkeiten, Du hast einen harten Tag hinter Dir, aber trotzdem danke.

David (wrestling-infos.de): Last time I interviewed Tag Team Champions „Rott und Flott“, this time I am sitting here interviewing two—time wXw Unified World Champion Tristan Archer, the „French Revolution“. I am happy you are here. How are you doing and most importantly, what happened to your eye?
Tristan Archer: I am doing quite well. I mean, it was not a good day, but I went through it. It was a remarkable weekend, I had a very, very great match at „Passion Pro“, but wrestling is wrestling. I got my head smashed to the ground, and it was just there. And the bruise is going down, going through my eyes, at the moment. Yesterday, I was unable to open my eye. Today, it is a bit better, except I look as if I put some make-up on my face. But the pain is gone.
David (wrestling-infos.de): It suits you. So, let us start with a very general question: What is your first memory you have of wrestling in general?
Tristan Archer: Oh, my first memory. I was four, maybe five years old. There was no school on Saturday and I just woke up and wanted to grab some food. So, I went to the living room and my dad was watching WWF, and it was the entrance of The Undertaker. The TV turned black, and I heard that „dong, dong, dong“ and I was hypnotized. I could not move anymore. I just sat next to my dad and I watched perhaps 45 minutes of wrestling and just did not think about getting some food anymore. Furthermore, I fell in love in that very first moment. I watched my very first wrestling match and I wanted to do this the rest of my life. I wanted to be a wrestler.
David (wrestling-infos.de): And that is what you achieved. You have been actively stepping into the ring since 2009. Which wrestlers have shaped you the most? Who helped you develop the most, especially in the early time of your career?
Tristan Archer: When I was a kid, I really liked Kane, The Undertaker, the big guys, I was really into these kinds of guys. But when I grew up and learned about the secrets of wrestling, I was able to identify guys my size, like Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Kurt Angle, all those technical guys. That really helped me find the way I wanted to be as a wrestler. As soon as I started wrestling, I had been lucky enough to work with guys like Tommy End and Jonathan Gresham, or Chris Hero. Those guys really helped me out, too. If I have to pick five names that define me a bit, I would say Eddie [Guerrero], Daniel Bryan, Jonathan Gresham, Tommy End and maybe Dolph Ziggler for the way he sells stuff.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Do you remember your first wrestling match? I looked it up, you lost against a wrestler called „Stixx“. How was it for you to have your very first wrestling match?
Tristan Archer: It was not the very first because I wrestled in Canada before – a Rumble and a Singles match before I got back to France. But the very first Match in France was against Stixx and I wrestled under the name of David Goliath because Stixx was a big dude, I was supposed to be a small dude. You know the story from the Bible, „David versus Goliath“. The promoter wanted me to have this name and I just used it in this show because it was my very first match, I had no experience and no wrestling name. I went there and there was this English guy. Very nice, very kind, he looks at me and says ‚No, I am not going to squash this person. He is far too big to be squashed by me.‘ So, we were going to do a maybe six, seven, eight minute easy match and I wanted him to make me bump at least twice, and he said ‚Oh, okay, no problem.‘ So, we did an easy match with one shining spot, and then he beat me down for the last five minutes. It was a very enjoyable first experience in France. The way we built up the match really put me over with the French crowds. I am truly thankful to have been able to work with him for my very first match in France.
David (wrestling-infos.de): That has been 13 or even 14 years ago. What is your worst experience you had in your career?
Tristan Archer: Worst experience? Easy. Not easy, but it was not the promoter’s fault. A short time before the „Cruiserweight Classic“, I got a giant injury. An adductor was just torn off from my bones, it was like cut. Luckily, I did not need to do surgery, but it was really, really painful. I was supposed to take some weeks or even months off. But I wanted to avoid doing that because the „Cruiserweight Classic“ was coming up. I wanted to test myself and make sure that even with my injury, I would be able to perform at the „Cruiserweight Classic“. It was such a big chance. I said to myself that I will find a way to do it and go through this pain. My very first match I did with that injury was for Ouest Catch. I told the man to find me a match with something easy to do. He made me work a Battle Royale where I did not even have to take a bump, maybe do a clothesline and throw somebody out of the ring. I was in the middle of the ring and tears came out of my eyes because everything was painful. Just giving a clothesline was painful. True pain, it was insane. I finished and won the match. When I was backstage, people asked me why I was crying. They wondered if I was that happy becoming the number one contender and I said ‚Yes. It is that important for me to become the Ouest Catch champion.‘
David (wrestling-infos.de): Talking about kayfabe.
Tristan Archer: Kayfabe, kayfabe, kayfabe. But yeah, it was the worst experience ever. And it was not only the pain, I was thinking about the Cruiserweight Classic. I thought that when I am not even able to be in the ring for five minutes and do nothing. Not even taking a bump and being in that kind of pain, I would not be able to work the Cruiserweight Classic. I was working for having a match in WWE since the beginning of my career, and when it is finally happening, I injure myself in the gym. That is an awful memory.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Let us get away from the bad memories and go to the other side. What is the best experience you had?
Tristan Archer: There are a few. The most recent one is winning the wXw Unified Wrestling Championship at „16 Gold Carat“ last year. I did not even know their plans a few days before. I thought they were giving the belt to Levaniel or [Axel] Tischer. Tischer came back from WWE, he was the biggest name in Europe. He is so talented, he can carry anyone in any kind of match. Levaniel was so over, the people loved Levaniel so much with his „Liebe“-gimmick. I was the French guy in the middle of it. People started loving me in the beginning and started to hate me badly. The feeling of being at the top of the biggest company in Europe, the special entrance with the French flags – I was working hard to put France on the wrestling map. Nobody cared about France when I was 25 years old. Nobody knew there is French wrestling. And in last year’s march, the French guy was on the top of Europe. I made it. So, it was clearly one of the best moments of my career.
David (wrestling-infos.de): I was there, it was indeed a special match and a special moment. Pure hate in the „Turbinenhalle“. You mentioned it, there are many German and Hungarian wrestlers, but we see many French wrestlers in wXw, too. You, the Frenchadors, Calypso, Anastasia Bardot, they have all been there before. How deep is the French talent in wrestling nowadays?
Tristan Archer: There is also Alex, the referee.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Yes, of course.
Tristan Archer: And you got Rick Salem when they did wXw NOW & Friends, you got Kuro and Christianum, you got some Belgian guys, too. It is really nice to see that the doors open increasingly for French people because they really work hard. They are severe about it. They are always asking for advice, they work hard on their gimmicks, on their looks and everything, just to be on top. I really feel the fire in the wrestling scene. Most of them are really working hard. It is a pleasure to see that. When I retire, the next generation will do better than me.
David (wrestling-infos.de): I spoke with Tassilo Jung last year around „Tag Team Festival“ and he told me that you are the one being responsible for recruiting French talent when he needs them at a wXw show. Tell us how that goes. Being in this scene so long, do you have a big network?
Tristan Archer: I still work for many promotions in France. When I am there, they make sure we are safe, getting a hotel and stuff like that. Look at wXw, they are that successful because it is not only a business, but a safe working place. I am working for promotions in France that work the same way. When I am there, I watch every match. I try to find out about the attitudes of the guys. I want to see if they are polite, seeking advice. Furthermore, I am constantly searching for people one can trust. In this business, you need to trust the people you work with. Tassilo and wXw trust me because I am not going to bring a friend there when he is not a good wrestler. It could be the best friend I have. If he is bad in the ring or unsafe, he is not what wXw is looking for. And they know that. So, I think that is why they trust me to be the connection between France and Germany.
David (wrestling-infos.de): You spoke about winning the wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship last year. You held it for around nine months, beside that one month we will not talk about. How satisfied are you with your championship run?
Tristan Archer: I am very satisfied. We can talk about that month, though, because it made me a two time wXw Unified champion. It was somewhat sad, but kind of cool, too, because I was not working with them for a very long time. When you look at the different champions they had, I think I am the one who got it the fastest and the one who got the title twice the fastest. I got a very cool run, I had good matches with Axel [Tischer], with Jurn [Simmons]. I remember one match in Hamburg, the crowd was outstanding. They were singing the „Jurn Simmons“-song for 25 minutes. Nonstop. It was crazy. Then I had a match with Jonathan Gresham, whom I have not met for five or six years. I won the title the same weekend he won the „16 Carat Gold“. A little story, Gresham and I were very close when he was in France, he used to spend time at my place, and we elaborated on the future and what we wanted to do in the wrestling business. And then, we are on the same weekend, on the same promotion, he wins the most prestigious tournament in the Indies, I win the biggest title in Europe. I was delighted. I avoided injuries, I had some great matches, some very nice reactions from the crows. Which was surprising because one always wonders whether one does his job as heel well or not. It is surprising to see people cheering when I kick someone in the balls. They mostly boo, but when I lost the title to Levaniel, for example, half of the crowd was behind me. Norman [Harras] helped me out, I kicked Levaniel in the balls and people cheered. Come on, people. Maybe it was a way for them to show that they liked my championship run. Even Roman Reigns, who is a pure heel, gets ovations all the time. Perhaps not in Canada and Montreal, but most of the time. I think they appreciate the work he is doing as a heel. It is weird, but we have to deal with this kind of reaction now.
David (wrestling-infos.de): I was at quite a few wXw shows, at least around Oberhausen and Bielefeld. You are mostly getting good heel reactions. I mean, there are people standing with their middle fingers in front of you.
Tristan Archer: I like that.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Let us talk about the „16 Carat Gold“ tournament. This year, it is the first time the wXw Unified World Wrestling championship is fought out at the tournament. What are your thoughts on that?
Tristan Archer: It is pretty unique. I do not know if it will be like that every year, but it is a good premiere, so why not? It has never been done before, so I think it is going to put a little more pressure around the tournament. You can win one of the most prestigious tournaments in the wrestling world and also the biggest belt in European wrestling. The winner of this year’s „16 Carat“ will make history. It is gigantic.
David (wrestling-infos.de): 16 guys are in the tournament, you are one of them. Do you have a dream opponent? There are fly-ins one does not usually see in Germany. Is there someone you would say, ‚Wow, I really want to fight this person‘?
Tristan Archer: Yes, I would love to wrestle Davey Richards. I talked about Tommy End at the beginning of the interview and I remember an interview from Tommy, just before he signed with WWE. He said that he had three or four dream opponents, and me and Davey were on that list. So, since that day, I wanted to have a match with Richards and see what we can do together. I think we got a style that we can really click well together and have a great match.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Well, while we are recording [21/02/23], neither yours nor Davey Richards‘ match is announced yet. So, maybe it will be your first round match.
Tristan Archer: That would be a very tough first round match for me if it is Davey. It would be a hard way to start the tournament. He is a veteran. He has been there for years. Not only that, but he wrestled the best in the world, he is one of the best in the world. Whoever is going to face Richards in the first round has to give everything because he is a tough opponent.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Yes, that is true. So, we talked about it earlier, you lost the title in December. What are this year’s goals for you in wXw? Or maybe in general?
Tristan Archer: I really try to help out people as much as I can. I want to give back what wrestling gave to me. I have been lucky enough to work with WWE twice. Furthermore, I was travelling the world, I was in the US, Kuwait, Qatar, Malaysia, everywhere in Europe. So, I have to give back to wrestling. I would like to try to find one kid who is doing wonderful, give him some good advice and see if he goes his way. And more specifically in wXw? Winning the „16 Carat Gold“. Or, maybe something easier because winning the Carat is tough, being Triple Crown champion. I want to win the Shotgun Championship and the Tag Team Championship. But I would need to find a tag team partner for that. Winning all the belts in wXw would be a great moment for me because that means a French guy made wXw history.
David (wrestling-infos.de): I see. Speaking of the tag team belts. If you had to choose a tag team partner to compete for those belts, who would it be?
Tristan Archer: Easy. As soon as he is back, Marius Al-Ani. I think me and Marius could be a very technical, tough, hard-striking tag team.
David (wrestling-infos.de): He was not in the ring for wXw since last year’s Carat, but maybe we will see him back.
Tristan Archer: Yes, since he got the injury. But hopefully yes, very soon. That would be great.
David (wrestling-infos.de): You were talking about the WWE Cruiserweight Classic earlier. Next year, or better, this year, NXT Europe is on the horizon. Is that still a dream for you?
Tristan Archer: It depends. If they come to me, ask me to be a part of it, and we agree to the terms, it would be a pleasure to work for them. Being a full-time wrestler in good conditions is still a dream for me. Being a wrestler, not only while working for WWE, it is giving emotions to the people everywhere you go. That is the way I see wrestling. Doing it full time and not only during weekends while having another job where you work five times a week, having time to breathe and relax a bit would be a new adventure. If they want me to bring my experience and see me as someone they can put their trust on, I would be happy to be there, of course.
David (wrestling-infos.de): I will keep my fingers crossed. Maybe they need someone with the connections you got in France, who knows. So, final question: What is the boldest prediction you have for wXw in 2023?
Tristan Archer: Tristan Archer in the Tag Team Tournament. World Tag Team Festival.
David (wrestling-infos.de): That would be great.
Tristan Archer: I just need to find someone to have crazy tag team matches for those days. I think that will be my main goal from now on.
David (wrestling-infos.de): Well, you have got a few months left to do so. Potentially you will get lucky and find someone.
Tristan Archer: I do not know. Time runs so fast.
David (wrestling-infos.de): That is true. Tristan, thank you so much for your time. Technical difficulties, you had a rough day, but thank you nevertheless.
