Im nächsten Teil unserer „wXw 16 Carat Gold“-Interviewserie widmen wir uns einem ehemaligen Star von Impact Wrestling. Die Rede ist hier, von niemand geringerem als Ace Romero. Er bestritt bei Impact viele Matches zusammen mit Larry D, als XXXL und in der X-Division. Ob er noch Kontakt zu seinem ehemaligen Tag Team Partner hat, wie seine Zeit bei Impact war und was er für seine Zukunft plant, erfahrt ihr hier.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Hallo liebe Wrestlingfans! Katha hier von Wrestling-Infos.de und bei mir ist heute Ace Romero. Hey!
Ace Romero: Danke, dass ich da sein darf. Ich bin super aufgeregt hier zu sein!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ich ebenfalls, wie geht es dir?
Ace Romero: Mir geht es gut und ich komme gerade auf Hochtouren. Es ist ein vollgepackter Monat für mich, aber ich kann es kaum erwarten, nach Deutschland zu kommen. Ich bin wirklich aufgeregt!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Es wird dein erstes Mal in Deutschland sein, oder?
Ace Romero: Ja, es ist sogar das erste Mal, dass ich nach Europa reise.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Hast du denn bestimmte Erwartungen an die deutschen Wrestling-Fans?
Ace Romero: Ich bin einfach bereit, zu sehen, wie sich diese unterschiedlichen Kulturen unterscheiden. Ich wollte schon immer in diesen Teil der Welt reisen, ich hab riesige Vorfreude!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Hast du schon im Vorfeld vom 16 Carat Gold Tournament gehört?
Ace Romero: Einige meiner Freunde haben bereits teilgenommen. Ich freue mich, dass ich es ihnen gleichtun kann.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Was erwartest du vom diesjährigen 16 Carat Gold?
Ace Romero: Zu gewinnen natürlich!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Natürlich! Wer wäre dein Traumgegner?
Ace Romero: In diesem Turnier werden so viele großartige Talente sein, viele neue Gesichter. Wer bei seiner Ankündigung als Teilnehmer des Turniers für mich direkt herausstach, war Biff Busick. Hauptsächlich deshalb, weil wir zur selben Zeit mit dem Wrestling angefangen haben, in der selben Schule, damals im Jahr 2008. Es wird einfach cool, diese Erfahrung mit ihm zu teilen und dass sich unsere Wege erneut kreuzen. Aber ja, ich bin mega aufgeregt. Alleine die Möglichkeit in so einem prestigereichen Turnier teilzunehmen. So viele Talente, ich freue mich einfach darauf, ganz egal was passiert.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ist es das erste Mal seit eurer Trainingszeit, dass du und Biff Busick gemeinsam arbeitet?
Ace Romero: Tatsächlich haben wir nie bei einem Event gegeneinander gewrestlet. Wir hatten damals, kurz bevor er weitergezogen ist, ein Sparringmatch. In 2015 habe ich ebenfalls mit ihm trainiert, es wäre also nicht das erste Mal. Es wird jedoch das erste Mal in einer langen Zeit sein, dass wir wieder vereint sind.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Die meisten deutschen Wrestling-Fans sollten dich von deiner Zeit bei Impact Wrestling kennen. Was war damals dein erster Eindruck, als du im Jahr 2019 unterschrieben hast?
Ace Romero: Ich war super aufgeregt und hatte eine wirklich coole Möglichkeit für die Company zu debütieren. Meinen Vertrag habe ich kurz vor Bound For Glory 2019 unterschrieben und habe direkt am nächsten Tag im X-Division Ladder Match mein Debüt gefeiert. Es war so aufregend, ein Teil von etwas neuem, ja frischem, zu sein.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Du hast viele Matches in der Tag Team-Division bestritten, arbeitest du bevorzugt als Tag Team- oder als Singles-Wrestler?
Ace Romero: Bevor ich zu Impact kam, habe ich nie als Teil eines Tag Teams oder Stables gearbeitet. Das war eine ganz andere Bestie, die es da zu zähmen galt. Tag Team-Wrestling ist etwas völlig anderes als Singles-Wrestling. Es gibt einfach so viele verschiedene Elemente, wenn du mit zwei zusätzlichen Personen in den Ring steigst. Das musste ich alles erst lernen. Genauso wie das Wrestling vor Fernsehkameras, das war anders. Ich habe das gelernt und dann gelernt ein Tag Team-Wrestler zu sein, so ganz im Vorbeigehen. Es war alles aufregend und neu für mich.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Dein Tag Team-Partner zu dieser Zeit war Larry D, steht ihr noch in Kontakt? Besteht die Chance euch beide wieder zusammen zu sehen, denn ich habe gelesen, er ist nun ebenfalls wieder ein Free Agent?
Ace Romero: Ich habe vor einigen Tagen mit Larry gesprochen. Ich habe ihm quasi gesagt, „Hey, ich freue mich für dich. Egal was als nächstes kommt, ich hoffe es funktioniert.“ Er ist offensichtlich sehr begabt, sehr bewandert. Er ist schon eine ganze Weile im Wrestlinggeschäft und ich habe es sehr genossen mit ihm zu taggen, also sag niemals nie. Wir sind zwei motivierte, große Jungs, die da rausgehen und der Welt zeigen wollen, was sie auf dem Kasten haben!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Du hattest auch einige Matches in der X-Division. Wie war es für dich mit Leuten wie Ace Austin oder Alex Shelley zu arbeiten?
Ace Romero: Zuallererst, Ace Austin ist ein mieser Showstealer! Nein Spaß, er ist großartig. Wir haben damals zusammen trainiert, als ich in Ohio gelebt habe. Er ist jung und auf dem Weg an die Spitze. Er ist fantastisch! Die Möglichkeit mit Chris Sabin zu arbeiten war unfassbar, insbesondere mit den Machine Guns [Anm: Motor City Machine Guns, das Tag Team von Chris Sabin und Alex Shelley]. Es war ein wahrgewordener Traum, dass Larry und ich mit Alex Shelley und Chris Sabin arbeiten durften.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Arbeitest du lieber mit kleineren Gegnern oder mit Big Men wie dir?
Ace Romero: Tja, ich bin unbestritten eine kräftige Person, ich habe mehr Vorteile. Was meinen präferierten Match-Stil angeht, bevorzuge ich es gegen kleinere Gegner anzutreten, besonders wegen dem Kontrast. Es ist einfach diese Art von Geschichte zu erzählen, David gegen Goliath. Eine meiner Lieblingsgeschichten, um sie im Ring zu erzählen. Es ist mir prinzipiell egal, aber wenn ich aussuchen müsste, würde ich bei den kleineren Gegnern landen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Im August 2019 hast du um deine Entlassung gebeten, was waren deine Gründe die Company ein Jahr vor deinem Vertragsende verlassen zu wollen?
Ace Romero: Es war einfach eine merkwürdige Zeit für mich und die Welt. Ich habe zwei Jahre gewrestlet und die Dinge kamen gerade ins Rollen, aber dann habe ich mich an meinem Geburtstag mit Covid angesteckt. Ich habe einige Dates verpasst und das letzte mal im April für Impact gearbeitet. Ich möchte nur arbeiten und den leuten zeigen, zu was ich fähig bin. Ich bin also von April bis in den Herbst hinein, also Oktober, November, ausgefallen, quasi den Großteil des Jahres. Ich möchte spielen, denn ich bin ein Spieler, aber ich verstehe, dass solche Dinge passieren können. Ich habe viel verpasst und es waren einige Dinge mit Impact, AEW und auch NJPW im Gange.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Wie ist dein Verhältnis zu Impact heutzutage? Gibt es noch Kontakt?
Ace Romero: Ich würde behaupten es ist gut und ich habe kein böses Wort über sie zu verlieren. Wie gesagt, am Ende des Tages geht es um das Geschäft und das verstehe ich. Die Umstände sind eben passiert und man kann niemanden dafür verantwortlich machen. Ich hoffe aber auch, dass mir die Tür immer offen steht. Man weiß nie, was in der Zukunft passieren mag und hoffentlich, finden wir eines Tages wieder zusammen, um Geschäfte zu machen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Was sind denn deine unmittelbaren Pläne für die Zukunft, sagen wir die nächsten zwei bis drei Monate nach Carat?
Ace Romero: Danach möchte ich einfach sehen, wie sich alles entwickelt. Dass ich im Carat stehe ist eine große Sache für mich. Wenn ich das Turnier gewinne, wird das riesig! Mein Hauptziel im Moment ist jedoch nach Deutschland zu kommen, da raus zu gehen und eine der besten Darbietungen in der Welt zu liefern und dieses Momentum mit in die Zukunft zu nehmen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Für welche Companies würdest du denn besonders gerne arbeiten?
Ace Romero: Ich halte mir meine Optionen offen, was größere Companies angeht. Ich habe viele Kontakte und es gibt haufenweise Companies in Amerika. Was ich aber gerne beibehalten möchte, ist in Europa zu arbeiten und hoffentlich auch wieder nach Deutschland zurückzukehren.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Gibt es da etwas spezielles, das du als Wrestler erreichen möchtest?
Ace Romero: Ich möchte nur mit dem, was ich geleistet habe, zufrieden sein. Bis jetzt habe ich ziemlich coole Sachen gemacht im Wrestling, aber es geht immer mehr. Es gibt immer das nächste Level. Darauf habe ich es im Moment abgesehen. Ich bin oft im Fitnessstudio und trainiere hart, um meinem Körper in die bestmögliche Form zu bringen und den Leuten einfach meine Fähigkeiten zu zeigen. Bisher hatte ich nicht die Gelegenheit, um auf meinem bestmöglichen Level zu performen, also ist es das, woran ich in Zukunft arbeite.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Wenn dir alle „verbotenen Türen“ offen stehen würden, wer wäre dein Traumgegner?
Ace Romero: Das ist eine gute Frage. Da draußen gibt es so viele unglaublich talentierte Wrestler. Aber wenn ich mir einen aussuchen müsste….
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Gehen wir doch einfach nach Ländern oder Kontinenten, wer wäre dein Traumgegner in Europa?
Ace Romero: Ein Traumgegner aus Europa wäre wohl jemand wie Walter, beziehungsweise Gunter, wie er jetzt genannt wird. Ich hatte nie die Gelegenheit mit ihm im Ring zu stehen, das wäre also cool!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Und in Amerika?
Ace Romero: In Amerika gibt es so viele. Das ist eine sehr schwere Frage. Ich weiß es nicht, jemanden herauszusuchen, mit dem ich in den Ring steigen möchte, fällt mir schwer. Wenn ich mit jemandem in den Ring steige, will ich, dass es episch wird und zwar sobald ich die Chance bekomme in der Zukunft. Sei es Impact, AEW oder New Japan, ich will einfach, dass es episch wird.
Tatsächlich gibt es doch jemanden und ich werde ihn hier und jetzt herausfordern! Ich möchte mit Jonah in den Ring steigen und mir mit ihm ein heißes Gefecht liefern. Das wäre wirklich cool!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ja, das wäre es! Da du gerade New Japan Pro Wrestling angesprochen hast. Warst du schonmal in Japan?
Ace Romero: Nie! Das ist ein weiterer Ort, den ich in Zukunft besuchen möchte. Wie gesagt, hoffentlich öffnet sich die Tür für das internationale Reisen und bleibt für die Welt geöffnet. Ich hoffe wirklich, dass sich mir die Chance bietet, Japan zu bereisen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ich habe gesehen, du hast auch einen Twitch-Kanal. Ist es ein Gaming-Kanal oder etwas anderes?
Ace Romero: Ich habe tatsächlich einen Twitch-Kanal. Er ist ziemlich neu, aber ja, es geht um Gaming. Ich bin immer noch dabei mir alles einzurichten und habe erst ein paar Streams hier und da gemacht, aber ich möchte in Zukunft noch tiefer einsteigen. Bisher gab es auch ziemlich gute Reaktionen von den Leuten, also möchte ich das weiterhin machen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Du bist also ein Gamer? Was ist aktuell dein Lieblingsspiel?
Ace Romero: Ich weiß nicht, ob ich mich als Gamer bezeichnen würde. Ich spiele Fortnite, aber bevor ich nach Ohio gezogen bin, habe ich nie wirklich Videospiele gespielt. Dort war ich dann Zimmerkollege von Sami Callahan und er und seine Freundin Jessica Havok haben Videospiele gespielt. Sie hat auch einen Twitch-Kanal. Deshalb habe ich mir eine Playstation zugelegt, um mit ihnen und meinen anderen Freunden zu zocken. Also ja, ich spiele Videospiele, aber ich bin nicht der größte „Gamer“.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Hast du schonmal ein Wrestling-Game gespielt?
Ace Romero: Ich meine, ich habe die früheren SmackDown-Teile gespielt. Die Sache ist die, die neuen Wrestlingspiele sind mir zu schwer. Ich drücke wild die Knöpfe und habe keine Ahnung, was ich eigentlich mache. Ich ziehe es vor, mich zurückzulehnen und mir Wrestling anzuschauen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Eine letzte Frage: Ich würde gerne wissen, wer deine Vorbilder im Wrestling waren, als du mit deinem Training angefangen hast?
Ace Romero: Eine von den Personen, zu denen ich aufgeschaut habe, als ich mit dem Wrestling anfing, war der Undertaker. Ich war immer ein großer Fan von The Rock. Genauso von Rikishi und Too Cool als Trio, die meiner Meinung nach ziemlich unterbewertet sind! Das sind die Menschen, zu denen ich aufgeschaut habe. Scotty 2 Hotty kommt genau wie ich aus Maine, das ist echt cool. Die Leute stellen mir immer diese Frage und denken dann, dass ich sage, ich liebe Bam Bam Bigelow. Auch wenn er ein erstaunlicher und unglaublicher Big Guy war, ich werde immer zu diesem Vergleich gezogen. Auch wenn ich jetzt Wrestling schaue, was mich zum Fan macht, sind nicht die Moves, sondern der Moment. Ich denke, dass zieht die Leute in ihren Bann und das ist, was ich mache, wenn ich wrestle. Ich möchte Momente erschaffen. Das reizt mich am meisten, dass die Leute diesen Moment einfangen können, denn sie erinnern sich nicht an die Moves, sondern den Moment.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Das ist wirklich wahr. Vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit genommen hast, meine Fragen zu beantworten. Ace Romero: Thank you for having me. I’m super excited to be here.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): I’m too. How are you?
Ace Romero: I’m good. I’m just gearing up. It´s a busy month, but I cannot wait to come to Germany. I’m super excited.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): It is your first time in Germany, isn’t it?
Ace Romero: Yes, it’s my first time being in Europe.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Do you have any expectations concerning the German wrestling fans?
Ace Romero: I’m just ready to see what the different cultures are like and all that stuff. I’m very excited. I’ve always wanted to travel to that part of the world, so I’m pumped.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Did you hear about the 16 Carat Gold tournament before?
Ace Romero: I’ve had many friends being a part of it before, so I’m excited to be part of it.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): What are you looking for in this year’s Carat Gold?
Ace Romero: Looking to win!
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Of course and you probably will. Who would be your dream opponent?
Ace Romero: There’s so many great talent that’s going to be in this tournament. There’s a lot of fresh faces. One of the people that instantly stood out when they announced some of the members of the tournament was Biff Busick, just from the fact that we actually started wrestling the same time, the same school back in 2008. It’ll be cool to be there with him and cross paths again. But yes, I’m super excited. Even getting the opportunity to wrestle in such a tournament. Very prestigious. So much talent in there, so I´m excited, no matter what´s going to happen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Is it your first time working with Biff Busick since your training days?
Ace Romero: We have never actually wrestled on an event ever. We wrestled in class once a time back in the day until he left. I was training with him for a while back in 2015, so it shouldn’t be the first time. We’ll be back together for the first time in a long time.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Most German wrestling fans are familiar with you from your time in Impact wrestling. What was your first impression when you signed with them back in 2019?
Ace Romero: Yes, I was super excited and I had a really cool way to get in. I signed my contract right before Bound for Glory 2019 and then debuting the next day in the X-Division ladder match at that event. I was just excited, to be a part of something new, something fresh.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): You worked a lot of Tag Team matches in the Tag Team division. Do you prefer working as a Tag Team or as a Singles Wrestler?
Ace Romero: When I first came to Impact, I had never worked in a team or a unit. That was a whole other animal to learn. Tag Team wrestling is so much different than singles. There are just so much more elements when you go into the ring with two extra people. That was a big learning curve. Also, being on television, television style matches, that was different. I was learning how to do that, and then I was off learning how to be a tag team wrestler, kind of on the fly. So yes, it was all fresh and all new to me.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Your Tag Team partner at that time was Larry D. Are you still in contact with him? I mean, is there a possibility to see you two together again? I´ve read, he’s a free agent now as well.
Ace Romero: I talked to Larry the other day. I just basically said, „Hey, I’m happy for you. Whatever happens next, I hope it works.“ Well, obviously he’s very talented, very knowledgeable. He’s been around in the wrestling business for a very long time. I enjoy tagging with him, so never say never. We’re two big, motivated guys that want to go out there and show the world what we can do.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): You also had matches in the X-Division. How would you describe working with guys like Ace Austin or Chris Sabin?
Ace Romero: First, Ace Austin is a very big show stealer. Just kidding, he´s great. We trained together back in Ohio when I was living in Ohio. He´s young, up and coming. He’s awesome. Getting able to work with Chris Sabin was awesome. Especially with the Machine Guns [Note: Motor City Machine Guns]. It was a dream come true that me and Larry could work with Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): And do you prefer working with smaller guys like those or more with bigger opponents?
Ace Romero: Well, obviously I am a bigger person. I have more of an advantage. As far as my preferred match style, I prefer to wrestle smaller opponents just because of the contrast. It’s easy to tell that kind of story, big guy versus the smaller guy. One of my favorite stories to tell. It doesn´t matter to me, but if I had to choose, that´s where I´d end up.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): In August 2021, you requested your release. What were the reasons behind you wanting to leave one year before your contract expired?
Ace Romero: It was just a weird time for me and the world. I had wrestled tweo years and things had started to pick up for us and then I ended up getting Covid on my birthday. I ended up missing some dates. The last time I’ve been working for Impact was in April. And basically, I want to work and I want to show people what I can do. I went from April to all the way to the fall, October, November for a better part of the year. I want to play. I’m a player. I want to play. But I get it. Those things happen. I missed some dates and there were a lot of things happening with Impact and AEW and all those things and New Japan. It is what it.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): And how is your relationship with Impact wrestling today? Are you still in contact?
Ace Romero: I would say it is good. I have no ill will towards them. Like I said, I understand, at the end of day, it is business. Although it can be frustrating, I understand, that the circumstances I had to go through, just happened. Nobody’s fault. But hopefully the door is always open. You never know what will happen in the future. And hopefully one day, we can come back together and do some business.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): And what are your immediate plans for the next month or two after Carat.
Ace Romero: Afterwards I’m just going to see how things play out. I think me going into the Carat is going to be big for me. I think once I win the tournament. That’s going to be huge for me. My main goal right now is, getting to Germany and going out and showing out some of the best performance in the world and then taking that momentum on the future.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Any companies you really want to work for?
Ace Romero: My options are open, as far as bigger name companies. I have a lot of relationships and there a lot of companies in America. One thing I would like to continue, hopefully everything goes well, is to go to Europe and to come back to Germany after this stuff.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Is there something you really want to accomplish as a pro wrestler?
Ace Romero: I just want to be happy with what I’ve done. And so far, I’ve done some pretty cool things in wrestling, but there’s always more. There’s always the next level. That’s what I’m looking for right now. I’m often in the gym, training hard, so I’m just working towards that I’m getting my body into the best it can be and really showing the world what I can do. I haven´t gotten the opportunity to perform on my best level yet, so that’s what I’m working on in the future.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): If all forbidden doors would be open, what would be your dream opponent or opponents?
Ace Romero: That’s a good question. There are so many good, amazing talents out there. But if I had to pick one….
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Go by countries or let’s say in Europe, who would be a dream opponent in Europe?
Ace Romero: A dream opponent in Europe would probably be somebody like a Walter or Gunter, how he is called now. I never had the opportunity to get in the ring with Walter, so that would be cool.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): And in America?
Ace Romero: In America, there are so many people. It’s a very hard question. I don’t know, it is hard for me to pick one person who I would want to get a ring with. But if I did get in the ring with somebody, I just want it to be epic. Once I get the opportunity, hopefully it will come to me in the future. If it´s Impact, AEW, New Japan, I just want it to be epic. Actually there is one guy and I’m calling him out right now. I want to get in the Ring with Jonah. I want to have a hot fight with Jonah. That would be pretty cool.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Yes, it would be cool. You’ve just mentioned New Japan Pro Wrestling. Have you ever been to Japan?
Ace Romero: Never! That’s another place I want to go to eventually. Like I said, hopefully this door traveling more internationally will open and hopefully stay open in the world. So hoppefully I get the opportunity to visit Japan.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): And I saw you have a Twitch channel. Will it be a gaming channel or something different?
Ace Romero: Yes, I do have a Twitch channel. It’s very new, but yes, it’s gaming. I’m still trying to get all the stuff set up for it, but I’ve only done a few streams here and there, that’s something I want to get further for the future. I got some pretty good reactions from people, so I want to continue.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): You’re a gamer? What is your favorite game these days?
Ace Romero: I don’t know if I call myself a gamer. I play the game Fortnite, I never played games, until I moved to Ohio, and I was roommates with Sami Callihan, and he played games and his girlfriend, Jessica Havok. She’s played video games aswell. She got a Twitch channel. That’s why I bought a Playstation to play games with them and the rest of my friends. So yeah, I play games, but I’m not the biggest „gamer“.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Have you played any wrestling games?
Ace Romero: I have played wrestling games in the past, like the early SmackDown games. The thing is, that the new wrestling games are so hard. I’m smashing buttons, I have no idea what I’m doing. So therefore I prefer to sit back an watch.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): One last question. I wanted to ask you about your idols when you’ve started wrestling. Who were your idols starting?
Ace Romero: So the people I looked up to, when I was coming up, getting into wrestling it was the Undertaker. I was always a big fan of the Rock. I was also a huge fan of Rikishi and Too Cool as a Trio, which are guys, who I think are highly underrated. That´s the people I was looking up to. Scotty 2 Hotty comes from Maine, that´s where I come from, so that´s pretty cool. But people always ask this question and they think I’m going to be like, oh, I love Bam Bam Bigelow. And even though he’s awesome and amazing as a big guy, I’ve always been drawn to comparison. Even when I watch wrestling today, what makes me a fan is not the move, it’s the moment. That’s what I think draws people in, and that’s what I want to do, when I wrestle, I want to create moments. That intrigues me the most, so that people can capture the moment. Because people won´t remember the moves, but the moment.
