Nach etwa zwei Jahren ist er wieder da! Beim neuesten Exklusiv-Interview von wrestling-infos.de stand uns erneut Steve Maclin – der neue und erste TNA International Champion – Rede und Antwort. Der auch aus seinen WWE-Zeiten bekannte Steve Cutler sprach über seinen Titelgewinn bei „TNA Unbreakable“, seine anstehende Titelverteidigung gegen Eric Young bei „TNA Rebellion“ sowie seine weiteren Pläne für dieses Jahr. Viel Spaß dabei!
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Ich heiße nicht nur Stephan, sondern euch auch herzlich willkommen zu einem neuen Interview bei wrestling-infos.de. Heute spreche ich mit jemandem, mit dem ich bereits vor etwa zwei Jahren das Vergnügen hatte. Steve Maclin, vielen Dank, dass du dir die Zeit genommen hast. Wie geht es dir?
Steve Maclin: Mir geht’s gut. Vielen Dank, dass ich da sein darf. Wie geht’s dir denn?
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Auch mir geht es super, danke. Wir sprechen heute aber aus einem ganz bestimmten Grund miteinander. In der vergangenen Woche konntest du bei „TNA Unbreakable“ die neu eingeführte TNA International Championship gewinnen, was dich zum ersten Titelträger macht. Erst einmal möchte ich dir deswegen gratulieren.
Steve Maclin: Vielen Dank.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Für meine erste Frage habe ich einen kleinen Vergleich vorbereitet: Der erste TNA World Champion war Kurt Angle, der erste X-Division Champion war AJ Styles und der erste TNA International Champion hört jetzt auf den Namen Steve Maclin. Wie fühlt sich das an, in einer Reihe mit diesen Legenden zu stehen?
Steve Maclin: Es hört sich wirklich noch surreal an, in dieser Liste zu stehen. Das sind Idole, mit denen ich vor dem Fernseher aufgewachsen bin bzw. auch heute noch schaue ich AJ Styles zu. Es ist wirklich surreal und ich hätte mir niemals vorstellen können, dass ich mit den beiden aufgezählt werde, aber jetzt sind wir hier. Ich bin euer erster TNA International Champion. Das ist so cool. Es war ein großartiger Moment, auf den ich wirklich stolz bin.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Ganz egal, was als Nächstes passiert, das kann dir keiner mehr nehmen. Diesen Sonntag musst du bei „TNA Rebellion“ deinen neuen Titel gegen Eric Young verteidigen. Siehst du ihn als große Gefahr an oder bist du dir sicher, dass du den Gürtel behalten wirst?
Steve Maclin: Eric Young und ich sind in der jüngsten Vergangenheit häufig gegeneinander angetreten und ich habe ihm gesagt, dass, solange die Northern Armory involviert ist, wir nicht zusammenarbeiten können. Aber wenn nur wir beide im Ring stehen, ist es cool. Wir verstehen uns. Wir sind Brüder. Wir sind Freunde. Wir beide wissen aber, was an diesem Sonntag bei „TNA Rebellion“ auf dem Spiel steht, die TNA International Championship. Als ich den Titel bei „TNA Unbreakable“ gewinnen konnte, wusste ich, dass ich jetzt nicht nachlassen darf, weil ich nur eine Woche zum Verschnaufen habe und ich den Titel verteidigen möchte. Ich plane, dass ich bei „TNA Rebellion“ als International Champion ankomme und den Abend als International Champion beende.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Meine nächste Frage hätte sogar darauf abgezielt, dass du und Eric Young zeitgleich Freunde und Feinde seid. Du hast jetzt schon deine Beziehung zu ihm beschrieben, aber könnte sich daran am Sonntag irgendwas verändern?
Steve Maclin: Ich glaube nicht, dass sich etwas ändern wird. Wir sind beide erwachsene Männer. Wir sind beide Kontrahenten und machen das schon lange genug. Wir wissen, dass es ausschließlich um die International Championship gehen wird und am Ende des Tages ernährt das unsere Familien. Es macht unseren Gehaltscheck ein wenig größer und setzt ein paar Nullen hinten dran. Wir arbeiten hart, weil wir immer vorhatten, Champions zu werden, denn wenn du in einer Company bist und kein Champion werden möchtest, warum machst du es dann überhaupt? Als erster TNA International Champion habe ich natürlich nicht vor, den Titel bei der ersten Verteidigung zu verlieren. Ich gehe also mit dem Wissen rein, dass Eric Young viel auf dem Kasten hat, aber ich kann noch mehr.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Als Deutscher muss ich folgende Frage stellen: Der Name der International Championship deutet darauf hin, dass sie weltweit verteidigt wird. Können sich die deutschen Fans darauf freuen, dich bald mit dem Gürtel im Seilgeviert zusehen?
Steve Maclin: Ich hoffe es. Es kommt aber natürlich auch auf die deutschen Promotions und TNA an, dass wir bald nach Deutschland, England, Europa und allen weiteren Ländern des Globus kommen. Ich möchte daraus wirklich eine internationale Championship machen und sie überall verteidigen, wo ich kann. Dazu möchte ich Talente aus der ganzen Welt zu TNA holen. Wenn jemand ein Titelmatch haben möchte, tretet bitte hervor und stellt euch an.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Gibt es denn schon konkrete Pläne, den Titel weltweit zu verteidigen? Einige genaue Daten?
Steve Maclin: Noch nicht. Aktuell muss ich mich erst einmal auf meine Bookings in den USA bei TNA konzentrieren. Wenn aber Gelegenheiten aufkommen, möchte ich sie gerne annehmen. Genauso wie Santino Marella mir das Titelmatch bei „TNA Unbreakable“ ermöglicht hat, als ich mich gegen fünf andere Wrestler durchsetzen konnte, möchte ich jetzt anderen die Gelegenheit bieten. Wenn es für mich also eine Chance gibt, den Titel weltweit zu verteidigen, werde ich sie annehmen.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Aufgrund der Kooperation zwischen TNA und WWE bzw. NXT wäre ein Auftritt in deiner „alten Heimat“ möglich. Joe Hendry war ja zuletzt auch bei „WrestleMania 41“. Ist das eine Option für dich?
Steve Maclin: Auch das kommt auf TNA und WWE ab. Wenn sie möchten, dass ich herüberkomme, werde ich das machen. Wenn jemand von WWE zu TNA, meiner neuen Heimat, kommen möchte, können sie das auch gerne machen. Würde ich gerne herübergehen und als neuer TNA International Champion ein wenig Salz in die Wunde streuen? Ja, natürlich. Es wäre ein großer Moment, wenn ich als TNA International Champion und ehemaliger TNA World Champion dort auftreten würde, aber das kommt nicht nur auf mich an.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Als wir vor zwei Jahren miteinander gesprochen haben, warst du noch der TNA World Champion, wie du gerade gesagt hast. Ist das ein Ziel, das du bald noch einmal erreichen möchtest?
Steve Maclin: Eines Tages möchte ich den Titel definitiv noch einmal gewinnen, aber aktuell fokussiere ich mich darauf, diesen Titel an die Spitze zu bringen. Dieses Gewicht trage ich gerne auf meinen Schultern und der Druck spornt mich an. Es motiviert mich und lässt meinen Hunger wachsen, denn ich weiß, dass wir viele Talente im Roster oder weltweit haben, die mir diesen Titel abnehmen möchten. Eines Tages möchte ich wieder TNA World Champion werden, aber jetzt fokussiere ich mich darauf, dass ich der erste TNA International Champion bin, was mich sehr stolz macht.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: 2024 warst du kein Champion und nicht unmittelbar in das Titelgeschehen involviert, dennoch warst du sehr präsent in den Shows. Es wirkte so, dass du trotzdem einen großen Schritt nach vorn gemacht hast. Würdest du mir da zustimmen?
Steve Maclin: Ich freue mich über jede Herausforderung. Ich möchte immer herausgehen und zeigen, was ich kann. Und ich war im Titelgeschehen. Ich habe alles gegeben und es könnte jetzt anders aussehen. Es gab ein Four Way Match in Atlanta, Georgia, zwischen Josh Alexander, Mike Santana, Joe Hendry und mir, doch dann verpasste Josh Alexander mir einen Low Blow und nahm mir die Gelegenheit. So kam Joe Hendry an das Titelmatch bei „TNA Genesis“. Wir könnten jetzt also eine andere Geschichte erzählen, aber alles passiert aus einem bestimmten Grund. Vielleicht musste ich wieder ein bisschen geerdet werden, aber es führte mich auch zur TNA International Championship. Ich freue mich also, dass es so passiert ist.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Was war denn in dieser Phase wichtig für dich, sodass du nach dem Verlust der TNA World Championship wieder stärker zurückkommen und jetzt die TNA International Championship gewinnen konntest?
Steve Maclin: Ich hatte einfach den Hunger und den Ehrgeiz, Gold zu gewinnen. Ich habe es schon oft gesagt: Wenn du nicht World Champion oder generell Champion werden möchtest, musst du dich fragen, was du hier überhaupt machst. Egal, ob es die World Championship, die Tag Team Championship, die X-Division Championship oder jetzt die International Championship ist, du musst Ziele haben. Wenn du keine Ziele im Leben hast, was versuchst du dann? Was möchtest du erreichen? Ich möchte weiter aufsteigen, mich selbst herausfordern und jede Challenge annehmen. Jetzt fühlt es sich einfach gut an, der International Champion zu sein.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: 2025 gab es viele Veränderungen im Roster, aber du wirkst aktuell wie jemand, der das Heft des Handelns in die Hand nimmt und TNA anführt. Siehst du dich auch in dieser Rolle?
Steve Maclin: Ja, das tue ich. Ich versuche es zumindest. Egal, ob mich die Fans oder das Management in dieser Rolle sehen, jedes Mal, wenn ich da herausgehe, möchte ich zeigen, dass ich aktuell der Mann der Company bin. Diese Last trage ich gerne mit mir herum, da sie mich weiter antreibt. Es ist mir egal, ob du mich liebst oder hasst. Das ist okay. Es ist meine Aufgabe, dass ich dich entweder auf meine Seite oder von mir wegbekomme. Auch das ist okay. Solange du über mich sprichst, ist das alles kein Problem. Es ist schön, einer der Champions und damit einer der Säulen von TNA zu sein.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Bleiben wir bei deiner Rolle als Leader. Könntest du dir eine Gruppierung um dich herum vorstellen oder bleibst du ein Einzelkämpfer?
Steve Maclin: Auch wenn mich Eric Young schon seit geraumer Zeit zu der Northern Armory bringen möchte, sehe ich mich als Einzelkämpfer. Stables haben mir in der Vergangenheit nicht weitergeholfen und alleine war ich zuletzt nicht unerfolgreich. Ich liebe es, auf mich allein gestellt zu sein, da es mich immer weiter anspornt.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: 2025 lief bislang ohne jede Frage sehr gut für dich, aber hast du noch weitere Ziele für das restliche Jahr?
Steve Maclin: Ich möchte einfach so lange wie möglich euer TNA International Champion bleiben und einen bestmöglichen Run hinlegen. Ich möchte weltweit gegen Herausforderer antreten, egal ob es bei TNA, woanders in den USA, in Deutschland, in Europa oder sonst wo ist. Es wäre ein wahr werdender Traum, wenn wir eine weltweite Tour machen würden, bei der ich weltweit TNA als International Champion vertreten kann.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Zu guter Letzt möchte ich dir die Möglichkeit geben, allen Lesern zu sagen, warum man auf keinen Fall „TNA Rebellion“ verpassen darf.
Steve Maclin: Es ist meine erste Titelverteidigung der TNA International Championship gegen Eric Young. Wir sind Brüder und wir lieben uns, aber gleichzeitig wissen wir, was auf dem Spiel steht. Wir haben sehr viel Respekt voreinander, aber am Sonntag spielt das keine Rolle. Diese TNA Internationak Championship ist wichtiger als unsere Freundschaft. Aber auch die restliche Matchcard ist wirklich gut besetzt, so wie es fast immer der Fall ist. Wir sind in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, für „TNA Rebellion“, aber auch in Irvine, Kalifornien, für TNA Impact und so bleiben wir immer in Bewegung. Es wird immer besser, weil auch die Stimmung so unglaublich ist. Die Fans übernehmen ihren Part und wir versuchen unseren zu übernehmen, sodass wir jedes Mal eine unfassbare Show abliefern.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Dem kann ich nur zustimmen. Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Welcome to a new interview at Wrestling Infos. Two years ago, I already had the honor of interviewing my guest today, so I’m looking forward to it even more. Steve Maclin, thank you very much for taking your time. How are you?
Steve Maclin: I’m doing well. Thank you for having me. How are you?
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: I’m great, thanks. But there is a specific reason why we are talking to each other today. A week ago, at „TNA Unbreakable“ you won the new TNA International Championship, making you the inaugural holder. First of all, Congratulations on that.
Steve Maclin: Thank you.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: I prepared a small comparison for my first question: The first TNA World Champion was Kurt Angle, the first X Division Champion was AJ Styles and now the first International Champion is Steve Maclin. How does it feel to stand in line with these legends?
Steve Maclin: It’s surreal to just even list these names. These are people that I grew up idolizing and I still watch today with AJ Styles. It’s surreal and never in my mind I would have thought I’d be up with those names at some point in my career, but here we are. I’m your first ever TNA International Champion. It’s a really cool. It was a good moment, and I’m very proud of it.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: No matter what happens next, nobody can take that away from you. This Sunday at „TNA Rebellion“ you have to defend your newly won International Championship against Eric Young. Would you consider him as a big threat, or how confident are you that you will retain the title?
Steve Maclin: Eric Young and I have been on this back and forth battle for a while now, and I’ve told him that as long as the Northern Armory is involved, we’re no longer together. But if it’s just he and I, we’re cool. We’re good. We’re brothers. We’re friends. But I think we both know what’s on the line this Sunday at „TNA Rebellion“ and that’s the TNA International Championship. Even when I won it at „TNA Unbreakable“, I knew right away that I can’t let my guard down because I know I have one week until I have to defend this and that’s what I plan to do. I’m planning to walk into „TNA Rebellion“ as the International Champion, and I plan to walk out „TNA Rebellion“ as the International Champion.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: My next question would have been that Eric Young and you seem to be friend and foe at the same time, you already described your relationship with him, Is there any possibility that this will change after Sunday?
Steve Maclin: I don’t think it will change. We’re both grown men, we are both competitors, and he’s been doing this long enough. We know we’re going into this, and it’s all about the International Championship and at the end of the day, that’s what puts food on the table. That’s what makes us our paychecks a little bit heavier at the end of the day and adds a couple more zeros. We’re working and what we’ve always planned to do is become champions because if you’re in a company and not trying to become a champion, then what are you trying to do? And as the inaugural TNA International Champion, I don’t plan to lose it in one night and carry this for one week. So going into it, I know he has a lot to offer, but I have a lot more to offer.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: As a German, I have to ask: The name of the International Championship suggests that the title will be defended worldwide. Can the German fans expect to see you in the squared circle here soon?
Steve Maclin: I hope so. That’s up to independent promotions over there, but also on TNA management to get us over there to Germany, to the UK, all over Europe and across the globe. I plan to make this an international Championship and just try to defend it anywhere I can and also bring in talent from all over the globe. If they want a shot at this title, please step right up and cross that line.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Are there any specific plans to defend the title worldwide yet? Any fixed dates?
Steve Maclin: Nothing yet. As of now, I’m pretty much fixed with my dates here in the United States and with my dates with TNA. But if something was to come up and an opportunity was to arise, I’m glad to take that opportunity. Just like winning the tournament at „TNA Unbreakable“, which was an opportunity given to me by Santino Marella when I beat five other men to become TNA International Champion, it’s an opportunity. If there’s an opportunity for me to come over there, I’m willing to take it.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Due to TNA’s cooperation with WWE and NXT, an appearance in your „old home“ would be possible, like Joe Hendry did at „WrestleMania 41“. Is that an option for you?
Steve Maclin: That’s again up to TNA and WWE management. If they want me to come over there, so be it, but if they want to come over to TNA, which I call my home now, and I’m proud to call it my home, they can do the same as well and cross that line. Is it something I would like to do to go over there and rub a little salt in the wound of being the first ever TNA International Champion? Yes, that would be a feel good moment to walk into that building as a former World Champion, also as the first ever TNA International Champion, but that’s that’s not up to me.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Like you just said, when we spoke two years ago, you were the reigning TNA World Champion. Is that a goal you want to achieve again?
Steve Maclin: Yeah, at some point in my career, but right now, I’m focused on making this title mean the most. That is a weight I love carrying and a bit of pressure that feels great right now just because it’s keeping the drive and hunger still inside of me. I know there’s other talent on the roster or anywhere on the globe that want to get a shot at this title now. Somewhere down the line, yes, but the focus right now is being the TNA International Champion, and I’m very proud to say that.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: In 2024, you weren’t a champion or even involved in the title race, but you were still incredibly present in the shows, and it seemed to me that you still took a big step forward in your career. Would you agree with me on that?
Steve Maclin: I like any opportunity. To get out there in front of a fan base is an opportunity to get better and to get my name known and people to understand me a little bit more. I was in the title picture. I tried as hard as I can and things could be different. There was a four way match in Atlanta, Georgia, with Josh Alexander, Mike Santana, Joe Hendry and me and behind the refs back, Josh Alexander kicked me low, and it took the opportunity. That’s when Joe Hendry got his shot at „TNA Genesis“. So we could be telling a different story, and things happen for a reason. Maybe I needed to be humbled a little bit at that time, but it also led me to this opportunity to become the first ever TNA International Champion, which I’m glad it did.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: What was important to you during this phase of your career after you lost the TNA World Championship to come back and be the inaugural International
Champion?
Steve Maclin: Just still having that hunger and that drive to chase gold, and I’ve said it so many times in interviews, if you’re not trying to be the World Champion or just a Champion in general in this business, then what are you doing? Whether it’s being the World Champion, the Tag Team Champion, the X-Division Champion or now the International Champion, you have to have goals. If you don’t have goals in life, what are you trying to do? What are you trying? I love to keep climbing, keep challenging myself and finding those different challenges in life. It’s just a really good moment to be the International Champion.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: In 2025 there was a major change in the roster, and you seem like someone who is currently leading the way for TNA. Do you also see yourself in this role?
Steve Maclin: I do. I try to put that on myself. Whether fans see that or the management sees that, no matter what, anytime I go out there, I try to act as if I’m the guy in the company. That’s the weight I like to carry on myself and to push myself and motivate myself to get better. Whether you believe in me or you don’t, that’s okay. It’s my job to try to either get you on my side or for you to hate me. That’s okay. You’re still talking about me, but either way, it feels good to be one of the Champions and one of the pillars here in TNA.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Following the mentioned role as a leader, is a stable possible for you or do you see yourself as a lone fighter?
Steve Maclin: Now I see myself as a lone fighter, with Eric Young trying to get me to join the Northern Armory for so long. It didn’t work for me in the past, so I’ve found pretty good success right now on my own, and I’m thriving at it, which I love and it’s been a challenge.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Undoubtedly, the year so far has been really good for you, but do you have any other goals for 2025?
Steve Maclin: Being your TNA International Champion as long as possible, making this title mean the most and challenging anybody from all over the globe, whether it’s on home turf in TNA, somewhere in the states, coming over to Europe or even if TNA was to come over there for a tour, that would be a dream of mine, to be there as a representative of TNA and as the TNA International Champion.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: Finally, I would like to give you the opportunity to tell all viewers why they should not miss TNA Rebellion this Sunday.
Steve Maclin: It’s my first-ever title defense with the TNA International Championship against Eric Young. We are brothers, and we love each other, but at the same time, we know what’s on the line. We have enough respect for each other to put all that aside. This TNA International Championship means a lot more than our own relationship as friends, but also this card is stacked from top to bottom, just like every card usually is. We’re out in Los Angeles for „TNA Rebellion“. We’re also there in Irvine, California, May 1st and 2nd for tapings for TNA impact, and the ball keeps rolling. It just keeps getting better, and the buzz is there. The fans have been doing their part, just like we’ve been doing our part, to steal the show every night.
Stephan „PBC_BayBay“ Leven: I can only agree with that. You heard it, this Sunday „TNA Rebellion“ with Steve Maclin vs. Eric Young for the International Championship and many other great matches. Steve, thanks again for taking the time and good luck on Sunday. I’m looking forward to it.
