Am morgigen Samstag um 10 Uhr deutscher Zeit startet New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) in Hokkaido, Japan den diesjährigen „Grade One Climax“ (G1 Climax). Zum 33. Mal findet das prestigeträchtige Turnier unter diesem Namen statt. Zu Beginn, in den 70er-Jahren, wurde das Turnier noch unter dem Namen „World League“ ausgetragen. Von 1978 bis 1982 lief das Turnier dann als „MSG League“, im Anschluss wechselte der Name für sechs Jahre zum „International Wrestling Grand Prix“ (IWGP) und wurde im Jahr 1989 zum „World Cup Tournament“. Im Jahr 1990 pausierte das Turnier zum ersten und einzigen Mal, seit 1991 trägt es den Namen „G1 Climax“. In der langen Historie des Turniers gelang es nur Keiji Mutoh (aka The Great Muta) und Kensuke Sasaki das Turnier als amtierende IWGP Heavyweight Champions zu gewinnen. Rekordsieger ist Antonio Inoki mit zehn Erfolgen – alle Siege errang er vor der Umbenennung zu G1 Climax. Unter dem aktuellen Namen konnte Masahiro Chono fünfmal die Trophäe in Empfang nehmen.
Das Turnier wird in diesem Jahr im Rahmen von 19 Shows im Zeitraum zwischen dem 15. Juli und 13. August 2022 ausgetragen. Erneut setzt man auf vier Blöcke mit jeweils 8 Wrestlern. Im Gegensatz zur Austragung im Vorjahr gibt es aber kleinere Änderungen. So wurden die Blockmatches in zwei große Gruppen aufgeteilt, die jeweils an einem Tag stattfinden. An den „ungeraden“ Tourtagen finden die Blockmatches der Blöcke A und B statt, an den „geraden“ Tourtagen wiederum die Matches der Blöcke C und D. Durch die neue Sortierung wird man auch das Viertelfinale wieder ins Leben rufen. Zuletzt gab es im Jahr 2004 ein Viertelfinale. Somit werden die beiden Erstplatzierten der vier Blöcke die KO-Runden erreichen. Ebenso hat New Japan das Time Limit der Vorrunden-Matches geändert. Statt der üblichen 30 Minuten beläuft sich die maximale Laufzeit der Block-Matches auf 20 Minuten. Ab dem Viertelfinale haben die Matches kein Zeitlimit mehr.

Der Sieger des Turniers erhält ein Titelmatch seiner Wahl um einen der vier Singles Titel (IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, NEVER Openweight Championship, IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship und NJPW World TV Championship). Dieses Titelmatch wird dann am 04. Januar 2024 im Tokyo Dome bei „Wrestle Kingdom“ stattfinden. Wrestler, denen es gelingt im Verlauf des Turniers einen amtierenden Champion zu pinnen, erhalten zumeist im späteren Verlauf des Jahres eine Chance auf den entsprechenden Titel. Seit 2012 ist es auch üblich, dass der Sieger des G1 Climax seine Titelchance vor „Wrestle Kingdom“ noch einmal aufs Spiel setzt. Meistens gegen die Teilnehmer, denen es gelungen ist, den späteren Sieger in den Blockmatches zu bezwingen. Normalerweise bedeutet der Sieg im G1 Climax auch den Spot im Main Event von „Wrestle Kingdom“, nur im Jahr 2013 wurde Tetsuya Naito, der den G1 Climax gewann, dieser Platz verwehrt. Aufgrund eines Fan-Votings tauschte das IWGP Heavyweight Championship Match zwischen Kazuchika Okada und Naito den Platz mit dem IWGP Intercontinental Championship Match zwischen Shinsuke Nakamura und Hiroshi Tanahashi. Gleichzeitig stand damals der „sekundäre“ Singles Title zum einzigen Mal im Main Event der großen Tokyo Dome Show.
