Beim diesjährigen wXw „16 Carat Gold“-Tournament gibt es im Teilnehmerfeld wieder eine Menge junger Talente, darunter auch Francesco Akira. Der italienische Wrestler hat im All Japan Dojo trainiert und ist mittlerweile Teil des Stables United Empire bei NJPW, wo er auch die IWGP Junior Tag Team Titles mit seinem Partner TJP hält. Dachte er, dass ihr Team so erfolgreich sein würde? Wie kam es dazu, dass er nach Japan ging und was hat er als Nächstes vor? Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Hallo, liebe Wrestling-Fans! Hier ist Katha von wrestling-infos.de und bei mir ist Francesco Akira. Wie geht es dir?
Francesco Akira: Hey, wie geht’s? Bonasera! Mir geht’s gut. Wie geht es dir? Wie geht’s allen?
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ich bin happy, dass ich dieses Interview mit dir machen kann, ich fühle mich wirklich geehrt. Wie war das Jahr 2023 bisher für dich?
Francesco Akira: Es war ziemlich gut und hat mit dem Tokyo Dome angefangen, also Wrestle Kingdom, der größten Show des Jahres. Es fing also ziemlich groß an und dann hatten wir eine weitere Tour, nachdem wir vor kurzem unsere Championships erfolgreich verteidigt haben. Es läuft also ziemlich gut. Und dann bin ich jetzt für ein paar Monate in Europa. Ich fange also an, durch Europa zu reisen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): 16 Carat Gold steht bald an und ist der Grund, warum ich das Vergnügen habe, dieses Interview mit dir zu führen. Du hast bereits für wXw gekämpft, aber es ist dein erstes 16 Carat Gold Wochenende. Was sind deine Erwartungen?
Francesco Akira: Ich bin sehr aufgeregt. wXw Carat Gold war eine große Sache, als ich anfing, Indie-Wrestling zu sehen. Es ist sehr beliebt, das größte Turnier in Europa. Und es tat mir sehr leid, dass ich es letztes Jahr verpasst habe, aber ich habe mich verletzt, deshalb konnte ich nicht teilnehmen. Aber dieses Jahr freue ich mich sehr darauf, dabei zu sein.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Worauf freust du dich am meisten?
Francesco Akira: Gewinnen natürlich. Der erste Italiener zu werden, der wXw Carat gewinnt, um auch in Deutschland Geschichte zu schreiben.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Gegen wen würdest du am liebsten im Turnier antreten?
Francesco Akira: Ich würde gerne gegen Irie antreten, ich denke, Irie sollte im Turnier sein, richtig? Shigehiro?
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ja, er ist dabei.
Francesco Akira: Ja, genau. Also, ich würde wirklich gerne wieder gegen ihn antreten. Aber ich weiß, dass es viele neue Talente in Deutschland, bei wXw oder in ganz Europa gibt, die im Turnier sind, wie Peter [Anmerkung: Peter Tihany] und viele andere. Ich bin also sehr gespannt auf die Herausforderung
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Die meiste Zeit kämpfst du in Japan. Was ist der größte Unterschied zwischen dem Wrestling in Japan und dem Wrestling in Europa?
Francesco Akira: Es ist einfach ein großer Unterschied. Japanisches Wrestling ist nicht europäisches Wrestling und europäisches Wrestling ist nicht amerikanisches Wrestling. Es ist also eine andere Welt, die Fans, der Stil und die Arenen. Alles ist anders. Natürlich liebe ich Europa, aber ich liebe auch Japan. Ich denke, es ist einfach eine andere Kultur. Und was ist der größte Unterschied? Ich denke, es sind die Fans. Ich liebe die Fans überall auf der Welt. Ich glaube, die Japaner sind sehr traditionelle Fans, sie sind ernster. Und in Europa kann man mehr Spaß haben, obwohl man kann überall Spaß haben, aber das ist der größte Unterschied, glaube ich.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Wrestling aus Italien haben nicht viele auf dem Schirm. Fühlst du dich dafür verantwortlich, das italienische Wrestling zu präsentieren?
Francesco Akira: Auf jeden Fall, absolut. Deshalb bin ich auch sehr stolz darauf, die Farben meines Landes zu vertreten, denn als ich anfing, war niemand in meiner Position. Deshalb möchte ich derjenige sein, der die Tür für viele andere italienische Wrestler öffnet. Vielleicht ist das der Grund, warum es mich wirklich stolz macht, der erste Italiener im Tokyo Dome zu sein, denn es zeigt mir, dass ich die Tür für andere Wrestler wie mich öffnen kann, andere junge Wrestler, die gerade erst angefangen haben und damit ihren Lebensunterhalt verdienen wollen. Sie sind genauso leidenschaftlich dabei wie ich. Also ja, das ist ein großes Ziel für mich.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Gibt es italienische Wrestler, nach denen wir Ausschau halten sollten?
Francesco Akira: Oh ja, auf jeden Fall. Ich denke, ich kann dir ein paar Namen nennen, wie Nico Verardi, der bereits bei wXw Carat gekämpft hat, zwar nicht auf der Card, aber in der Exhibition letztes Jahr. Und Amir Kumari, das ist ein weiterer guter Name. Adriano aus Rom. Ein Haufen guter Namen, die man nachschauen kann. Sie brauchen nur eine Gelegenheit, um zu zeigen, was sie können.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Eigenartige Frage: Ist Bruno Sammartino ein Vorbild für dich?
Francesco Akira: Ich meine, Bruno Sammartino ist natürlich ein Vorbild für mich, aber das liegt für mich zu weit in der Vergangenheit. Ich bin nicht damit aufgewachsen, Bruno zu sehen. Er war schon im Ruhestand, als ich geboren wurde, glaube ich, ja, ich bin mir sicher, dass er das war. Er war also keiner, den ich früher gesehen habe, aber als Italiener denke ich, er ist der längste WWE-Champion aller Zeiten ist, und er kommt aus Italien. Er hat eine Statue in seiner Heimatstadt hier in Italien. Also ja, ich mag es, wenn die Leute, nicht vergleichen, aber wenn sie sagen: „Oh, du bist Italiener wie Bruno Sammartino“, weil es nicht viele gibt.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Gehen wir zurück nach Japan. Du warst Teil des All-Japan Dojo. Hattest du schon immer ein Auge auf Japan geworfen oder wie kam es dazu, dass du nach Japan gegangen bist?
Francesco Akira: Ich hatte eigentlich kein Auge auf Japan geworfen, weil – nun, nicht nie, aber ich war noch jung. Das Produkt im Fernsehen war immer die WWE. Ich bin also damit aufgewachsen, das zu sehen. Aber dann hat mich Tajiri eines Tages in Italien gesehen und er hat mich über ein Talent-Scouting nach Japan geholt. Und da habe ich mich in das japanische Wrestling verliebt. Ich habe in Japan ein paar Jahre lang jeden Tag im Dojo trainiert, und dann kam ich an den Ort, an dem ich sein wollte: New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ich glaube nicht viele haben den Dokumentarfilm „This is All-Japan Dojo“ gesehen. Könntest du deine Erfahrungen beim Training beschreiben?
Francesco Akira: Ich denke, wenn die Leute den Film nicht gesehen haben, dann ist das der beste Weg, um zu verstehen, wie ein japanisches Dojo funktioniert. Das ist es, was ich jeden Tag gemacht habe. Also, Training, Chanko kochen, putzen und Japanisch lernen. Das war meine Reise, mein Alltag, jeden Tag. Ich denke, dieser Dokumentarfilm ist der beste Weg, wenn jemand daran interessiert ist, ins Dojo zu gehen, oder sogar als Fan, der wissen will, was ein Wrestler vor seinem großen Debüt durchmacht.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): War die Umgewöhnung für dich schwierig?
Francesco Akira: Ja. Es ist schwierig, weil Japan ein völlig anderes Land ist. Es ist eine andere Sprache, eine andere Kultur, eine andere Art und Weise. Ich musste alles von Null an lernen, und ich war 19 Jahre alt, als ich zum ersten Mal nach Japan kam. Ich musste also bei Null anfangen, und am Anfang war es ziemlich schockierend. Aber dann habe ich mich verliebt und bin immer noch verliebt in das Land.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Du und Tajiri hattet eine Art Mentor-Schüler-Beziehung bei All-Japan Pro Wrestling. Was hast du am meisten gelernt, als du mit ihm in den Ring gestiegen bist?
Francesco Akira: Ja, auf jeden Fall. Ich verdanke ihm eine Menge. Er ist mein japanischer Meister. Er ist mein Meister, mein Senpai, wie wir in Japan sagen. Und er hat sich um mich gekümmert, mich durch alles geführt, durch gute und schlechte Momente. Was ich am meisten gelernt habe, ist, dass alles eine Erfahrung ist. Das Leben ist eine Erfahrung und man muss es genießen. An vielen Tagen war ich sehr müde, sehr traurig, sehr deprimiert. Aber er hat mir geholfen, alles zu überstehen. Und er hat sich immer gut um mich gekümmert. Also ja, er ist mein Meister. Natürlich hat er mir im Ring eine Menge beigebracht, aber vor allem hat er mir gezeigt, dass das Leben eine Erfahrung ist.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Wer hat dich sonst noch in All-Japan stark beeinflusst?
Francesco Akira: In All-Japan?
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Oder in Japan im Allgemeinen?
Francesco Akira: Ich denke, ein anderer, der keine Inspiration war, aber sich um mich gekümmert hat und alles, wie Tajiri es getan hat, war Will Ospreay. Er hat an mich glaubt und mir eine Chance gegeben. Und er ist jemand, zu dem ich aufschaue.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Wie hat es sich angefühlt, den All-Japan Pro Wrestling Junior Heavyweight Title als erster Europäer überhaupt zu gewinnen?
Francesco Akira: Es war ziemlich surreal. Ich habe immer noch gute Erinnerungen an diese Zeit, denn es war – ich habe das Turnier ein paar Wochen zuvor gewonnen, das Junior-Turnier, und es war eine große Sache, weil ich der Typ aus Italien war. Ich war ein Niemand, und dann habe ich gewonnen, und dann habe ich den Titel gewonnen. Dadurch sind viele auf mich aufmerksam geworden. Ich war der erste Gaijin nach Kenny Omega. Es hat sich also sehr gelohnt und war aufregend nach zwei Jahren harter Arbeit.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Du hast dich 2020 mit Kento Miyahara zusammengetan, um, leider erfolglos, um die All-Asia Tag Titles zu kämpfen. Kannst du uns sagen, wie es war, mit Kento in All-Japan unterwegs zu sein?
Francesco Akira: Er ist ein erstaunlicher Wrestler. Ich denke, er ist einer der besten im japanischen Wrestling und er ist auch einfach ein toller Typ. Es war ziemlich lustig, mit ihm zu arbeiten.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Und du hast Ospreay bereits erwähnt. Du wurdest den New Japan Fans als Will Ospreays Protegé vorgestellt. Wie kam die Verbindung zustande?
Francesco Akira: Wir haben uns angefreundet, als wir während der COVID-Zeit in Japan waren. Weil wir hier geblieben sind, konnten wir so gut wie gar nichts machen. Es gab keine Lock Downs, aber es war sehr streng und es gab keine Gaijins oder andere Leute. Ich war der Einzige in meinem Dojo. Er war auch allein, also haben wir uns einfach angefreundet. Und dann hat er angefangen, mir beim Wrestling zuzusehen und mir Ratschläge zu geben. Irgendwann hat er an mich geglaubt und mir die Chance gegeben, United Empire beizutreten.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Dein Debüt in New Japan war bei Hyper Battle ’22 in Ryogoku. Bis dahin haben sich viele Leute gefragt, wer das ominöse neue Mitglied von United Empire ist. Wie hat es sich angefühlt, in der Sumo Hall im New Japan Ring zu stehen?
Francesco Akira: Einer der lustigsten Momente war es, die Kommentare der Leute zu lesen. Oh, wer ist dieser Typ? Wer ist dieser Kerl? Und ein Typ sagte: „Oh, das ist Nunzio von der WWE“. Es war also sehr lustig. Aber es war wie ein wahr gewordener Traum. Ich beobachte New Japan schon sehr lange. Seit ich nach Japan gekommen bin und sogar schon vorher. Als ich in Ryogoku stand, war ich noch nie in dieser Arena, aber ich habe sie so oft im Fernsehen gesehen. Es dachte „Oh wow! Jetzt bin ich hier.“ Es war zwar nicht mein Debüt als Wrestler, aber es war cool, die Reaktion der Fans zu sehen. Und die Reaktionen in den sozialen Medien und so, das war wie ein wahr gewordener Traum.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Jetzt bist du Teil von United Empire. Wie würdest du deine Rolle in dem Stable beschreiben?
Francesco Akira: Ich denke, ich bin vor allem, oder ich und TJP sind die – ich fange noch mal von vorne an, tut mir leid. Ich denke, dass jeder bei United Empire etwas Besonderes ist. Aaron Henare, er ist der Typ mit dem verdammt harten Schlag. Great O’Khan hat einen guten Charakter. Will ist der beste Wrestler der Welt. Ich und TJ sind schnell, flink und er ist technisch unglaublich und eine Legende. Er hat eine lange Karriere hinter sich. Er hat mir alles beigebracht. Ich glaube, mein Herz schlägt dafür, meine junge Energie in die Gruppe zu bringen. Weißt du, ich bin der Jüngste in der Gruppe, also möchte ich immer etwas mehr bieten. Ich möchte immer Leidenschaft in das Team einbringen und etwas bewirken. So wie ich und TJP es mit den Junior Tag Belts gemacht haben. Wir haben das Niveau in dieser Division angehoben.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Als Tag Team habt ihr am jährlichen Best of Super Juniors Turnier teilgenommen. Wie war das für dich?
Francesco Akira: Oh, genauso wie vorher. Best of Super Juniors. Jeder schaut Best of Super Juniors. Zumindest schauen alle, die Juniors mögen, Best of Super Junior. Der erste Italiener zu sein, der dabei ist, war einfach unglaublich. Leider habe ich es nicht gewonnen. Ich habe vor, es dieses Jahr zu tun. Aber es war eine große Leistung für mich.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Und jetzt bist du zum ersten Mal IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion mit TJP. Habt ihr als Team auf Anhieb funktioniert?
Francesco Akira: Ja, ich denke, ja. Als wir das erste Mal um die Titel gekämpft haben, haben wir sie gewonnen. Deshalb arbeiten wir so gut zusammen, weil es bei uns einfach Klick gemacht hat. Wir brauchten keine Zeit, um zusammen zu trainieren. Wir brauchten keine Zeit, um uns gegenseitig kennenzulernen. Bei uns hat es einfach geklickt und wir haben eine Show angeliefert.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Was zeichnet euch als Tag-Team aus?
Francesco Akira: Ich denke, dass unsere Matches uns hervorheben, schau dir einfach unsere Matches an. Und die Junior-Tag-Division, die Leute haben sie immer verschlafen, weißt du. Einige der besten Matches stammen aus dieser Division und die Leute haben sie immer vernachlässigt. Aber jetzt reden viele Leute über diese Division, und das liegt an uns. Ich denke also, dass unsere Matches uns abheben.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Wie seid ihr auf den Namen Catch 22 gekommen?
Francesco Akira: Ich glaube, TJ ist auf die Idee mit Catch 22 gekommen. Wir haben sozusagen zwei Dinge miteinander vermischt. Catch 22 ist, glaube ich, ein amerikanisches Sprichwort für etwas, das fast unmöglich zu erreichen ist. Man sagt zum Beispiel „es ist ein Catch 22“. Aber ich bin mir nicht sicher. Den anderen Teil kenne ich besser. 2/2 heißt auf Japanisch „Ni Ni“ und eine unserer Tag-Team-Kombinationen ist der Double Knee gegen den Gegner. Es heißt also „Knee Knee“, „Catch Ni Ni“. Das ist wie Double Knee. Ich mag den Witz daran.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Das ist ziemlich clever.
Francesco Akira: Ja, genau. Und ich sage immer, TJ mag das nicht, aber ich sage immer gerne, dass es daran liegt, dass ich 22 war, als wir das Team benannt haben. Aber jetzt funktioniert es nicht mehr, weil ich 23 bin.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ihr habt die Titel sofort nach der Gründung des Teams gewonnen und habt sie bisher auch verteidigen können. Habt ihr erwartet, dass ihr als Team so erfolgreich sein würdet?
Francesco Akira: Nein, wirklich, nein. Ich kannte TJP nicht. Ich kannte TJP natürlich, aber ich kannte ihn nicht als Person. Ich kannte ihn nicht näher, also war es wie eine Wette, verstehst du? Er hat auf mich gesetzt und ich auf ihn. Und am Anfang, vielleicht in den ersten zwei oder drei Matches, war ich mir nicht sicher, wohin das führen würde, aber jetzt bin ich ziemlich zuversichtlich, dass wir die Besten sind.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Viele sprechen davon, dass sich in der Junior-Division ein Wandel hin zu einer neuen Generation vollzieht, fühlt sich das auch so an?
Francesco Akira: Ja, ich glaube schon. Weißt du, es kommen jetzt neue nach oben, wie Master Wato und andere, die hoffentlich aus der Young Lion Division kommen. Die New Japan Junior Division besteht aus Hiromu, Despera, Ishimori. Es ist also cool zu sehen, dass neue Typen wie ich aufsteigen. Ich bin 23. Master Wato ist 25 Jahre alt, er ist auf dem Weg nach oben und eine Herausforderung. Und andere wie Lio Rush und YOH und andere neue Leute, die bereit sind, die Herausforderung anzunehmen. Das gefällt mir.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Um noch einmal auf den Jahresbeginn zurückzukommen, deine erste Wrestle Kingdom Tokyo Dome Show. Kannst du uns sagen, wie es war, dort zu sein?
Francesco Akira: Es fühlte sich surreal an. Ich habe Wrestle Kingdom zwei Jahre lang als Fan verfolgt. Und jetzt bin ich vom hintersten Platz ins Spotlight gekommen. Ich stand auf dem Highway am Entrance und es war verrückt, denn die Arena ist riesig. Meine Familie war da, und ich habe die größte Show des Jahres nach der Pandemie eröffnet. Die Restart-Show, die Show der neuen Hoffnung und des Neubeginns, die Inoki-san-Memorialshow. Es war also eine große Ehre für mich, der erste italienische Wrestler zu sein, der das macht, und einfach dabei zu sein. Und wenn ich wrestle, dann konzentriert man sich auf das Match, auf den Kampf. Aber als ich Will bei seinem Match gegen Kenny beobachtet habe, konnte ich sehen, wie viele Leute da waren, und es war verrückt.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Würdest du also sagen, dass Tokyo Dome eines deiner Ziele im Wrestling war?
Francesco Akira: Oh ja, absolut. Als ich vor vier Jahren nach Japan kam, stand ich davor und habe gehofft, eines Tages dort zu stehen. Also, ja.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Was sind deine anderen, sagen wir mal, ultimativen Ziele im Wrestling?
Francesco Akira: Wie ich schon sagte. Die Tür für andere italienische Wrestler zu öffnen. Einen größeren Namen zu bekommen, der anderen helfen kann, neue Rollen zu übernehmen und der Beste zu sein und die Junior-Singles-Championship in New Japan zu gewinnen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Ich habe gehört, dass du wegen Visaproblemen nicht mit United Empire beim Cross-Over PPV mit AEW und New Japan antreten konntest. Konntest du dein Problem lösen? Könnten wir dich also sehen in der USA?
Francesco Akira: Oh ja. Ich habe jetzt ein neues Visum, also hoffentlich. Wer weiß, aber ich würde gerne dahin. Ja, bald, aber ja, letztes Jahr konnte ich nicht kommen, weil ich kein Visum hatte.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Hast du irgendwelche Pläne, von denen wir wissen können?
Francesco Akira: Es gibt einige Pläne, von denen ihr noch nichts wissen dürft.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Okay. Und was sind deine unmittelbaren Pläne nach 16 Carat Gold? Du meintest, du bist gerade auf Europatournee?
Francesco Akira: Ja, ich werde nach wXw nach Dubai gehen und das freut mich, weil es mein erstes Mal dort ist. Also gehe ich nach Dubai und dann, denke ich, werde ich zurück nach Japan gehen.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Am Ende meiner Interviews stelle ich immer eine Entweder-oder-Frage. Also meine Frage an dich: Wenn du die Wahl hättest, würdest du lieber das Best of Super Juniors-Turnier in diesem Jahr gewinnen oder am G1 Climax-Turnier teilnehmen, aber nicht gewinnen?
Francesco Akira: Ich würde auf jeden Fall das Best of Super Junior gewinnen. Ich mag die Juniors mehr als die Heavyweights, also mag ich die Junior Heavyweights mehr. Ich denke, sie sind die besten der Welt, die beste Division. Also ja, auf jeden Fall das erste.

Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): I am so happy I can do this interview with you, so I really feel blessed. How was 2023 so far for you?
Francesco Akira: It was pretty good and started with Tokyo Dome, so Wrestle Kingdom, the biggest show of the year. So, it started pretty big and then, we had another tour after we just recently defended our championship, successfully defended. So, it’s going pretty well. And now, I will be in Europe for a couple of months. So, I’m starting to travel around Europe.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): 16 Carat Gold is just around the corner and the reason why I have the pleasure to do this interview with you. You have already wrestled for wXw, but it’s your first 16 Carat Gold weekend. What are your expectations?
Francesco Akira: I am very, very excited, you know. wXw Carat Gold was a big deal when I started watching indie wrestling, you know. It has very popular characters; the biggest tournament in Europe. I was very sorry that I missed it last year, but I got injured, so I couldn’t. But this year I’m very, very excited to be a part of it.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): What are you looking for the most?
Francesco Akira: Winning, of course. It’s like becoming the first Italian to win wXw Carat, and make history in Germany.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Whom do you want to face the most in the tournament?
Francesco Akira: I would like to face, I think, Irie should be in the tournament, right? Shigehiro?
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Yes, he’s there.
Francesco Akira: Yeah. So, I would really like to face him again. But I know there’re many, many new talents in Germany, wXw, or all over Europe that are in the tournament like Peter [Note: Peter Tihany] and many other guys. So, I’m excited just to challenge myself.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Most of the time you wrestle in Japan. What is the biggest difference between wrestling in Japan and wrestling in Europe?
Francesco Akira: It’s just a big difference, you know. Japanese wrestling is not European wrestling and European wrestling is not American wrestling. So, it’s a different world, the fans, and the style, and the arenas. Everything is different. Of course, I love Europe but also I love Japan. It’s just a different culture. And what’s the biggest difference? I think it is the fans. I love fans everywhere in the world. I think the Japanese are very traditional fans, so they’re more serious. And in Europe, you can get more fun, you can get fun everywhere, but that’s the most different, I think.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Pro wrestling from Italy is not on the agenda of many. Do you feel a responsibility to highlight Italian pro wrestling?
Francesco Akira: Absolutely. That’s why I’m very proud to bring with me the colors of my country because when I started, no one was in my position. I want to be the one that opens the door for many other Italian wrestlers, that’s why being the first Italian at Tokyo Dome was something that made me really proud. Because it shows me that I can open the door for other wrestler like me, other kids that just started, that want to do this for a living. They are passionate about it like I am. So yeah, that’s a big goal for me.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Are there any Italian wrestlers we should look out for?
Francesco Akira: Oh yeah, for sure. I think I can give you a couple of names like Nico Verardi that already wrestled wXw Carat, not on the card but in the exhibition last year. And Amir Kumari, it’s another good name. Adriano from Rome. A bunch of good names you can look up. They just need an opportunity to show what they can do.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Curious question, but is Bruno Sammartino a role model to you?
Francesco Akira: I mean Bruno Sammartino, of course, is a role model to me, but it was too back in the past for me. I didn’t grow up watching Bruno. He was already retired when I was born, I think, yeah, I’m sure he was. So, he wasn’t like a guy I used to watch. But as an Italian, it makes me think that he’s the longest WWE champion ever, so…and he’s from Italy. He has a statue in his hometown here in Italy. I like when people, not compare, but when they go like “oh you’re Italian like Bruno Sammartino” because there’s not many.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Going back to Japan. You were part of the All-Japan Dojo. Did you always have your eye on Japan or how did it come about for you to go to Japan?
Francesco Akira: I actually never had my eyes on Japan because – well, not never but I was still young. The product on TV was always WWE. So, I grew up watching that. But then, one day Tajiri saw me in Italy and he did like a talent scouting and brought me to Japan. That’s when I fell in love with Japanese wrestling. I started in Japan for a couple of years of training every day in the Dojo and then I came to the place, I wanted to be: in New Japan Pro Wrestling.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): I think not many have seen the documentary “This is All-Japan Dojo”, so could you describe your experience training there?
Francesco Akira: I think if people didn’t watch it, I think that’s the best way to understand how a japanese Dojo works. Like that’s what I used to do every day, training, cooking Chanko, cleaning, and studying Japanese. That was my journey, my day every day. I think that documentary is the best way if someone is interested in getting to the Dojo or even as a fan, who wants to know what wrestlers go through before everything, before their big debut.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Was the transition from Europe to Japan difficult for you?
Francesco Akira: I mean yes, it was difficult because Japan is a totally different country. It’s a different language, different culture, different manner. I had to learn everything from zero and I was 19 years old when I first got into Japan. So, I had to start from zero and yeah, it was pretty shocking at first. But then, I fell in love and I’m still in love with the country.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): You and Tajiri had some sort of mentor-pupil relationship at All-Japan Pro wrestling. What did you learn most when you stepped in the ring with him?
Francesco Akira: Yeah, for sure. He’s like…I owe him a lot. He’s my Japanese master. He’s my master, my senpai, as we say in Japan, and he’s the guy that took care of me, that guided me through everything, through good moments, bad moments. What I learned most is, everything is experience. Life is an experience and you have to enjoy it. Many days, I was very tired, very sad, very depressed, but he helped me get through everything and he always took good care of me. He’s my master. Of course, everything in the ring, he did teach me a lot in the ring, but especially, he taught me that life is an experience.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Who else were the big influences for you in All-Japan?
Francesco Akira: In All-Japan?
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Or in Japan in general?
Francesco Akira: Someone that was not an inspiration, but took care of me like Tajiri did: Will Ospreay. He is another guy that believed in me and gives me a chance. And he is a guy I look up to.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): How did it feel to win the All-Japan Pro Wrestling Junior Heavyweight Title as the first European ever?
Francesco Akira: It was pretty surreal. I still have good memories from that time because it was – I won the tournament a few weeks before, I think, the junior tournament, and it was big news because I was the guy from Italy, I was no one, and then I won it, and then I won the title. It put me on the radar. I was the first gaijin after Kenny Omega, so, it was very rewarding and exciting after two years of hard work.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): You teamed with Kento Miyahara in 2020 to unsuccessfully challenge for the All-Asia Tag Titles. Can you tell us what it was like to be with Kento around in All-Japan?
Francesco Akira: He’s an amazing wrestler. I think, he is one of the best in Japanese wrestling and he’s just an amazing guy also. So, it was pretty funny to work with him.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): You already mentioned Will Ospreay. You were introduced to the New Japan Pro Wresling fans as Will Ospreay’s prodigy. How was the connection made?
Francesco Akira: We bonded when we were in Japan during COVID time. Because we stayed here, we couldn’t do almost barely nothing there. There wasn’t a lockdown, but it was very strict and there was no gaijin or other people. I was the only one in my dojo. He also was by himself, so we bonded. And then he started to watch me wrestle and give me advice. And at some point, he believed in me and gave me the chance to join the United Empire.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Your debut in New Japan was at Hyper Battle ‘22 in Ryogoku. Until then, many people were wondering who the ominous new member of United Empire was. How did it feel to stand in the New Japan ring in Sumo Hall?
Francesco Akira: I think one of the funniest parts was reading all the comments from people. Who’s this guy? Who’s this guy? And some guy goes like, “Oh, he’s Nuncio from WWE”. So, it was very funny. But it was like a dream come true. I watched New Japan for a very long time, since I came to Japan and even before. Standing in Ryogoku, this arena I’ve never been in, but I watch it so many times on TV. It was like “Oh wow! Now I’m here.” It wasn’t my debut as a wrestler, but it was cool to see the reaction of the fans and the reaction on social media and everything, so it was like a dream come true.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Now you’re part of the United Empire. How would you describe your role in the stable?
Francesco Akira: I think me especially or like me and TJP are the – let me restart it, I guess, sorry. I think everyone in the United Empires is special. Aaron Henare, he’s the guy with the fucking super hard striking. Great O’Khan with a good character. Will, the best wrestler in the world. Me and TJ are like fast, speedy and he is technical, and amazing and he’s a legend. He had a long career. He teaches me everything. So, I think my part is bringing my young energy inside the group. I’m the youngest guy in the group, so I always want to give everything. I always want to bring passion to the team and bring something, like me and TJP did with the junior tag belts. We raised the level of this division.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Before being in this tag team, you competed in the annual Best of Super Juniors tournament. How was that for you?
Francesco Akira: Same as before. Everyone watches Best of Super Juniors. At least everyone who likes juniors watches Best of Super Juniors. Being the first Italian to be inside of it was just amazing. I didn’t win it unfortunately. I’m planning to do this year. But it was a big accomplishment for me.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Now you are IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion with TJP for the first time. Did you click as a team right away?
Francesco Akira: Yeah, I think, yeah. Because the first time we challenged for the title, we won it. So that’s why we are working so well together because we just clicked. We didn’t need any time training together. We didn’t need any time to know each other. We just clicked and put on a show.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): What makes you stand out as a tag team?
Francesco Akira: I think, our matches make us stand out, I mean, just watch our matches. And the Junior Tag division was like – the people always slept on it. Some of the best matches are from that division and people always slept on it. But now, many people are talking about this division and that’s because of us. So, I think our matches make us stand out.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): How did you come up with the name Catch 22?
Francesco Akira: I think TJ came up with the Catch 22. We mixed kind of two things. Catch 22 is, I think, an American saying for saying something that is almost impossible to do. You say like “it’s a Catch 22”. But I’m not sure. I know better the other part. 2/2 in Japanese is “Ni Ni” and one of our tag team combinations is the Double Knee together to the opponent. So, it’s “Knee Knee”, “Catch Ni Ni”. That is like Double Knee. So that’s why, it’s the joke I like.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): That’s quite smart.
Francesco Akira: Yeah. And I always, TJ doesn’t like this, like to say it’s because I was 22 when we named the team, but now it doesn’t work anymore because I’m 23.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): You won the title immediately after forming the team and have been able to defend it so far. Did you expect to be so successful as a team?
Francesco Akira: I mean, no, really, no. I didn’t know. I knew TJP, of course, but I didn’t know him as a person. I didn’t know him closely, so it was like a bet, you know? He bet on me and I bet on him. And at first, maybe the first two or even three matches, I wasn’t sure where this was going, but now I’m pretty confident that we are the best.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Many talk about the change taking place in the junior division towards the new generation. Does it feel like that from the inside as well?
Francesco Akira: Yeah, I think so. New guys are coming up now. Like Master Wato, and other guys like hopefully from the young lion division. New Japan junior division has been Hiromu, Desperado, Ishimori. Yeah, these guys. So, it’s cool to see new guys coming up like me. I’m 23. Master Wato is 25 and coming up and challenging. And the other foreigners like Lio Rush and YOH and new guys that are ready to take the challenge. I like this.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Coming back to the start of the year, your first Wrestle Kingdom Tokyo Dome show. Can you tell us how it felt being there?
Francesco Akira: It felt surreal. I watched Wrestle Kingdom as a fan for two years. And now, from the furthest seat, I was in the centre. I was on the highway in the entrance and it was crazy because the arena is enormous. My family was there and I was opening the biggest show of the year after the pandemic. The restart show, the show of new hope and new restart, the Inoki-san memorial show. So, it was a big honour for me to be the first Italian wrestler to do that and just to be there. And when I wrestle, you’re focused on the match, you’re focusing on the fighting. But when I also seconded Will on his match with Kenny, I could realise how many people were there and it was crazy.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Would you say wrestling in Tokyo Dome was one of your goals in wrestling?
Francesco Akira: Oh yeah absolutely. Well, when I came to Japan four years ago, I walked in front of there and hoping one day to be there. So, yeah.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): What are your other, let’s say, ultimate goals in wrestling?
Francesco Akira: Like I said before. Open the door for other Italian wrestlers. Get a bigger name that can help other people to take new roles and be the best and win the Single Junior Championship in New Japan.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): I heard you couldn’t be with United Empire at the cross-over PPV with AEW because of visa issues. Were you able to fix your problem? So, could we see you in the US?
Francesco Akira: Oh yeah. I have my new visa now, so hopefully. Who knows, but I would love to come. Yes, soon, but yeah, last year I couldn’t because I didn’t have a visa.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Do you have any plans we can know about?
Francesco Akira: There’s some planes that you cannot know about yet.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): Okay. What are your immediate plans after 16 Carat Gold? You said, you’re touring Europe right now?
Francesco Akira: Yeah, I will go, after wXw, to Dubai and that makes me very excited because it’s my first time there. So, I’m going to Dubai and then, I think, after that I will go back to Japan.
Katha (Wrestling-Infos.de): At the end of my interviews, I always ask a “would-you-rather question”. So, my question for you: If you had the choice, would you rather win the Best of Super Juniors tournament this year or participate in the G1 Climax tournament but not win?
Francesco Akira: I’d for sure, win the Best of Super Junior. I like Junior more than Heavy, so I like the junior heavyweights better. I think they’re the best in the world, the best division. So yeah, for sure the first one.
