Moment mal, Xia Brookside!

Xia Brookside: Mir geht’s gut.

Ich hatte also ungefähr 100 Matches in meinem ersten Jahr.

Meine eigenen Haustiere haben und all so was.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Und er wusste genau, was du gemacht hast.

Xia Brookside: So viele große Namen hier.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Last uns verdammt nochmal loslegen!

Xia Brookside: Ja, genau!

Was steht also als Nächstes für dich an?

Dann gibt es also große Neuigkeiten.

Xia Brookside: Ah, so viele.

Xia Brookside: Ich gehe tatsächlich jeden Tag ins Fitnessstudio. Ich habe angefangen, Gitarre zu spielen, Akustikgitarre. Ich liebe Musik. Ich wollte eigentlich Musiker werden. Mein Vorbild als Kind war eigentlich Avril Lavigne.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Du bist also ein Skatergirl?

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): My dear wrestling fans! Welcome to the newest episode of the Wrestling Info Podcast today with this great young Lady, Xia Li! Wait a second, Xia Brookside! I am so sorry! How are you doing today?

Xia Brookside: I was good!

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): I have to apologize, I just managed to catch a cold overnight, anyways!

Xia Brookside: It’s OK, I’ve been traveling. All day.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): I’ve heard that you’ve had some troubles and just recently signed the contract before picking up the call.

Xia Brookside: I’m good. No, we’re all good. Yeah oh wow. I just got to the venue where we’re actually wrestling tomorrow, and it’s incredible! I’ve never seen anything like it. The production here is absolutely fantastic. I’m so excited.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): So is it your first time in Poland?

Xia Brookside: It is, it’s my first time here.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): The first impressions were good, I see. What I wanted to ask you about is, and I’m hoping for a good one here, is what is the first thing you remember about wrestling?

Xia Brookside: Oh wow, I think one of the first things that I remember is watching my dad wrestle in Hanley. That’s like Victoria Hall Hanley near Stoke-on-Trent in England and it was my favorite venue and I used to love watching that all the time. It’s like a really old school, like British hall. So like the history of the hall itself is just incredible. And then watching my dad wrestle there and then luckily back in 2016, I actually got to wrestle there too. That was like my first thing and I was like Oh my God I’m wrestling where my dad wrestled. This is crazy, and then I did the, do you know Kendo Nagasaki? He held a British wrestling tournament there in 2016, which I won. It’s one of them venues, that was my first experience, my first memory. But then also being a place of  my own wrestling career too, it’s kind of coming full circle.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): It’s always about the full circles. I want to come back to that later. You’ve started wrestling pretty young, at the age of 17 if I’m correct, at ASW.

Xia Brookside: My first match was May 2015 so I have been 16, and turned 17 later that year, but that summer I did like a full six weeks on the camps. So, I had about 100 matches in my first year.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Wow, OK, that’s that’s a significant number, like huge.

Xia Brookside: Grateful to All Star Wrestling because they are not even known off now, to be able to do that many matches, but because they had the camps and you’re out wrestling every day, sometimes twice, sometimes three times the same day. Like going from one venue, building the ring, wrestling, taking it down, going to the next venue like you’re just living, breathing, wrestling.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): And just recently this year you made your comeback after, I guess a 5 year absence from ASW, you had your fair shares with Mariah May.

Xia Brookside: That was the October half-time we did 10 shows back-to-back. And yeah, I wrestled Mariah Mae every single day and it was like, since NXT UK closing, the 1st place I called was All Star Wrestling and I was like, I have to come back, this is where I started. This company means the world to me. It’s the reason that I am here where I am now and I was like, I just have to come back. I just need to get that love, get that energy, like feel myself.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Since Robbie Brookside, your father is a pretty big deal in the business. What was it like for you to grow up to a famous dad? Was it more of a curse or a sake?

Xia Brookside: It’s kind of a, I don’t want to say 50/50, because it’s really not a 50/50. It’s just different, but to me, it was so normal. Growing up like all through school from, primary school when I was like 8-9 ten years old. I’d get picked up from school and we’d go straight for a wrestling show. Get home at like 1:00 to 2:00 o’clock in the morning. I’d go back to school the next day. Get picked up, go back to another show. That was just how I was raised and that was just super normal to me, but I never wanted to be a wrestler. So, when I was watching my dad and I was never what I wanted to do, I wanted to be a vet. I wanted to go collect. Have my own pets and everything like that. It wasn’t until he left and went to America 9-10 years ago now. It wasn’t until he left that I was like, wait! I felt this big hole in my life and there was missing ‚cause I’ve gone from this fast-paced lifestyle of school, wrestling, school, wrestling, the odd days off. Like OK now we’re travelling down South for a week or whatever it was, to nothing, and that’s when I realized. I was like wait, I actually want to be a wrestler, this is what I meant to do. Dude and then I rang my dad and I was winding him up a little bit like from the age of 13. I was like I’m going to be a wrestler. He was like no, you are not. He was like go to school, get your degree, become a vet, Anything! He was like, no, you’re not becoming a wrestler. And then when I was 15 there was this guy called Darren Thunder Walsh. He was a big wrestler at the same time. Like he wrestled my dad for years and he took over his school. So, I went in and I’m like, Uncle Darren, my dad said I’m allowed to train. He did not! But I was like, he said I can train and he (Darren Walsh) was like, OK. Years later, I found out that Darren actually rang my dad and said, is it OK, if I train your daughter? Is it OK if I train her? My dad was like, look if she’s serious and wants it more than anyone else. I don’t want her to get hurt, I want her to train properly. So, he gave it the a clear, but for years I didn’t know that, like I just went behind my dad’s back and I’m like yeah, he’s great.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): And he exactly knew what you were doing.

Xia Brookside: Yeah, he knew the whole time.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): But he must be pretty proud of you now, right?

Xia Brookside: Yeah, I think so, no he is! But our wrestling careers have been completely, like we just didn’t cross paths, he’s never trained me. He’s never done anything for me, we don’t really speak about wrestling because I wanted it to be my career.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Since we talked about, you debuted with 16, then at the age of 19 you did the May young classic for WWE. What was clinching on your mind when you found out you would be participating in the tournament? Do you remember that?

Xia Brookside: Oh my. Oh yeah, I remember it. God, that year was so crazy for me. Like 2017 to 2018 was the craziest, like most accomplished biggest matches in my career within a year. So, I went my first tour of Japan with stardom was July 2017 to October 2017. I came back to England for a month. Then I went to America for a month. And did a tour over there. Came back for December, went back to Japan from January through to April. Another three months, came home for a month, went back to America, came back. And whilst I was in America, so my life at this point is like living out of my suitcase, right? I was never home, when I was home it was like for 3-4 weeks at a time. I didn’t really unpack ever and then I’m in America. I’m staying with my dad. And he goes out with his friends for the night. I get this e-mail through. From Canyon Cement and it’s like, hey, we want you to be a part of the the may young classic, do you wanna do it? And I broke. I was like, Oh my God. So the first thing I do, I’m ringing my dad and he’s like, I know! I couldn’t tell you! I’m like what? You know? And he knew, and ah, I was so young like 19. I know there’s people coming in now a lot younger than me and younger than I was at that time, but we’re talking three, how I don’t even know how many years ago now like four or five years ago, four years ago when this happened and like. That was crazy at that time, like for me to even be traveling. And traveling to America and wrestling in Europe, it wasn’t really the in-thing at that time. It was a big deal to be 17, traveling on your own, like crazy. Getting on to this country, who’s picking you Up? I don’t know.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Or working for stardom at that age right from. From the British Isles.

Xia Brookside: Yeah, Oh my gosh, but that that e-mail changed everything for me like. We want you to be a part of the may young classic. And then I go to the may young classic and it’s the first time my dad ever sees me wrestle. Like at this point I’m 3-4 years into my career and it’s the first time my dad has seen me wrestle. And you can see it. I love watching that match back because you can see every single emotion in that match and it’s so raw and it’s so authentic and like I’m so in the moment and my dad being there ringside watching me and he’s never seen me. And I’m like, Oh my God. We didn’t talk to each other all day leading up to that match. Same building, we just didn’t talk. To each other.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Yeah, but it’s just again the full circles, right? And then? Yeah, it’s definitely a highlight match to recommend to our fans to watch and just relive the emotions, ‚cause that is what wrestling is all about, right?

Xia Brookside: Exactly, it’s about feeling it, being in it, feeling the emotions, talent, story. That’s the magic of wrestling. That’s what it’s for, right?

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): You say it, but after the May young classic tournament, your WWE Journey wasn’t over, so you had your run in NXT UK, but surprisingly to several fans has just gone on hiatus so did. You and your colleagues had a feeling there might be something up in the air.

Xia Brookside: I don’t know. I went from the May young classic and they said, they’d stay in America with us, train with us for a couple of weeks. And I was like, sure, like, I’m still a teenage girl and said, yeah, we’ll do whatever you want. I trained with them for a few weeks. Incredible experience and then they said we want to fly you back and have you as Part of NXT UK. I was like, yeah. I’m ready, I’ll go. It’s been such a journey and looking back, I know people careers are so much longer than mine’s been, but 4 years with the biggest wrestling company in the world? It is incredible, like the waves of emotion. How much I’ve learned, how much I’ve grown as a wrestler and even as a person in that timeline, you change a normal person just so much between the age of 19 and 24. And that’s like in a normal life. Imagine doing that on TV growing up. It’s not like it’s not a normal thing to do, but I found out so much about myself because of that company. I learned so much and I grew so much and I wouldn’t say we knew. Like it was going to come to an end, but it hasn’t come to an end. You know, like this is just right now and this is going to be such a big part of so many people, careers and journeys and like this interview. One day, we’re going to look back on it and we’re going to be like, Oh my God. That’s why, that happened. Because I think that everything happens for a reason, and like this break away or whatever you wanna call it or whatever is next. I don’t know what’s next, but like one day we’re gonna get to look back and be like that was the best thing that could have happened.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): So when you ask what’s next, I can tell you that. WWE announced NXT, Europe for next year might this be something you would be interested in?

Xia Brookside: Yes, sure, I mean. I know you were gonna be like this. No, I think it’s gonna be great. I’m like, look at how big they made NXT UK in such a short time. And then making that even bigger and like. There were so many eyes on that brand and now it’s gonna just be this even. Bigger version with like more talent from all over like more stories, more history, more journeys like. I’m excited for what’s next like? It’s gonna be so.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Obviously more, more promotions, more competition, the ones who profit from it really are in the fans and that’s what’s great about it. Sticking to the present, now you’re in Poland working for Kinguin Prime Time Wrestling #3 legends. You’re working. The first-ever woman match of the promotion? What are your? What are your expectations for the show?

Xia Brookside: Oh, I’ve already been completely shocked! I walked in and it’s just the set and not everything even set up yet and I was like, whoa, this is huge. When someone rings you and they’re like, hey, do you want to come do this show? I’m like. Yeah, let’s go do a show! The production behind this company has completely overwhelmed me, the way that they’ve taken care of us so far? There’s no fault, everything has been so professional. The advertising of the show, the announcements of the show, the production that they put in behind the show. You have to watch this show, tune in and watch, like it’s gonna be absolutely incredible. You’ve got big names headlining the show. You’ve got matches. You’ve got me, obviously. So, it’s gonna be great.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Nice, I’m looking forward to see it, especially since I’m a big fan of Joe Hendry, who’s also on the show.

Xia Brookside: So many big names here. It’s called the Legends show.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Yeah, it’s fitting perfectly.

Xia Brookside: Coming in from around the world, it’s great.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): So since the past few months you’ve been traveling Europe pretty basically, we spoke about stardom. Is there an itch for you to come back to Japan or even compete in Germany to give the German fans a glimpse of you?

Xia Brookside: That would be incredible. I mean, I love Japan. Japan is my favorite place to be. I love the culture. I love the language, I love all the girls there. The promotions. Japan is like my number one. Back in 2018 I was like, before the May Young classic, I was about to move to Japan. Until I got that call. I was like, OK yeah, let’s move to Japan, like that’s how much I love that country and the company and like everything they have out there. I definitely wanna get back out there. Germany? I actually wrestled in Germany? Ah, it’s so long, it is just so crazy. I think it was back in either 2015 or 2016. I wrestled in I want to say Hamburg, but I feel like, I could be wrong.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): I might check that information!

Xia Brookside: Check that one. Oh, but I did wrestle at that show. I loved it, but my dad was always a bad guy out there, and at that point in my career I’d always been the good guy. So, I was going in and they hated him over there. Like, absolutely hated my dad and I was like, he’s the biggest heel in this country. He’d grow his beard and got his hair down and he’d come out to like the crusher and then there’s me coming in like, Hiiiiii!

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Just talk about football!

Xia Brookside: I do know nothing about football! I wanna get in every weather, I feel like now is my time. Before I got signed, before 2018, I would travel in the world. I was Young and I was traveling and I was coming to Europe and I was resting. I was going to america, was going to Japan and now that’s where I want to be again. I’m gonna start traveling again, like this is my first one back in Europe. I’m in Poland. I walk into this absolutely incredible show that they’re about to put on. The amount of love and care and the productions put on a show like this for the wrestlers and for the fans? That’s incredible, like that’s where you want to work. That’s the kind of effort and energy, like everyone wants this to be incredible. I’m just going to keep traveling so, everyone in Europe, I’m available, let’s go.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Let’s f´n go.

Xia Brookside: Yeah, all right, let’s go.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): It’s nice to see that this quality of the product, from everything in the ring, to behind the scenes has grown and is so widely available over Europe and the smaller promotions and something like that. Therefore, what’s next for you? So, do you have plans for the near future for some bookings or big announcements?

Xia Brookside: Yeah, I have some plans that I’m not allowed to talk about yet. It sucks because, I’m like, I want to announce it. I’m like, yeah, we’re doing this, but I mean, just stay tuned. That’s gonna get announced in like the next month. So big news coming up then. From next year on, I just want to travel like, I wanna wrestle everywhere, I wanna wrestle everyone. I just want to get back out there and having fun and kicking ass, let’s go!

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Nice, do you? Do you have any specific dream opponents you’re aiming for?

Xia Brookside: Ah, so many I see. I just did an interview with Tommy Dreamer and Mickie James and now Mickie James is on my list. I mean, she has been (on the list) for a very long time, but I think even just like, having that interview and being like wait, this is actually a possibility, like this can happen, ‚cause sometimes I feel like you can get a bit set back and you’re like, well it might not happen. But no, it’s real, this could happen. Like, let’s make it happen. So I’m gonna put Mickey’s at the top of my list now.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Nice, maybe we can set something up with Impact right here.

Xia Brookside: Since they’re already here.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Not Speaking of dream opponents, but the people who you enjoyed most working with. Is there someone you´d say , This match was absolutely fantastic. Working with this guy or woman?

Xia Brookside: So I’m gonna say this person is Kaylee Ray. I wholeheartedly believe if it wasn’t for Kaylee Ray, I wouldn’t have done half the stuff in my career that I’ve done. Because I only trained for a year, maybe less than a year before my first match, and then I went straight on the road, but I was wrestling Kaylee every single day on the camps and you don’t learn more than from being in the ring with someone who has traveled the world, who knows so much, who’s so intelligent. She’s like a big sister to me, that girl means the world to me and I really class her as one of my trainers now too. Because if it wasn’t for her. Like, I don’t think I’d be here.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): Alright, nice so we might someday get a rematch of you. We’re excited for it. Besides wrestling, I know for a fact you’re pretty active on YouTube. You’re into hiking. What are your hobbies when you’re not in the ring or not in the gym?

Xia Brookside: I do go to the gym every day. I started playing guitar, acoustic guitar. I love music. I actually wanted to be a musician. My role model growing up was actually Avril Lavigne.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): So you’re a skater girl?

Xia Brookside: I’m a skater girl, except I rode BMX when I was a teenager, back in the days. I love music. I love traveling. That, I climbed Snowden, actually for charity it was. Something that was on my list, but there’s a children Hospice near me, in Leicestershire, that look after children with end of life care. So, they were like, hey, we’re gonna go climb Snowden and raise money and I was like sure I’ll climb Snowden. It was incredible, like the stuff that they do for that. Charity, so I love charity work and I don’t know. I just love helping people and getting out there, getting to see people. Hang out, you know, anything, just socializing. Like anything, that’s just not sat at home.

Marko (Wrestling-Infos.de): To come to an end of the interview, I ´d like to thank you of the time for your time and for his chat. Would you tell us where the fans can find you on the social medias?

Xia Brookside: Twitter and Instagram super easy at Xia Brookside and all of my stuff and information is on there and I just want to say a massive thank you for having this interview with me and chatting and hanging out.
